Whether you're somebody who came into college with a clear idea of what you wanted to do with your life, or you had absolutely no clue what path to go down, you've probably had an experience at some point where you wanted to change your major. While some people only temporarily experience this anxiety over their future and stick with their original field of study, other students may feel like they have no choice in changing their major and unhappily continue doing something they're not passionate about.
Although changing your major might seem scary and can be a bit of a hassle at first, it's definitely worth looking into if you're truly unhappy with your current circumstances. Here are just a few reasons why it's completely okay to change your field of study:
You'll be in good company.
So many people change their majors while in college nowadays that its almost become uncommon not to change your academic area of interest at least once. While your older family and relatives may not understand, you'll at least have the support system of peers who've probably done the same thing themselves.
If time and money are being spent towards it, why not do something you enjoy?
Seriously. You're the one who has to go to class every day, do all of the assignments, and prepare to utilize the information you're learning towards a future career. If your heart's not in it, this can be a total bummer and make the future seem bleak and uninteresting. Do yourself a favor and major in something you love. It won't make any amount of student debt disappear, but at least it will provide some sort of incentive to the time and money spent towards getting a degree.
Being passionate about your choice of major will open up more opportunities than you'd expect.
If you're not truly passionate about what you're studying, it can be easy to not find much interest in anything related to your major: fellow classmates, major-related organizations, job opportunities, etc. Being uninterested in all of the potential perks that come with your major can really affect your overall college experience and networking opportunities. When you find a major that excites you and encourages you to participate in classes, join organizations, and become closer to your fellow peers, it makes a substantial difference in your everyday life, as well as paving the way towards a better future once you graduate.
