Reasons Why Growing Up Sucks

Kids Meals

Getting kids meals when you were younger was awesome because you got lunch and a toy! Now as an adult, you grab lunch and sometimes you get the kids meal to save money, but you realize that nowadays the toys suck. Plus, you don’t get full off of a kids meal. When you get a regular meal, it comes with no toy, of course. Secretly, you were wishing you had the tiny cheap toy to keep you entertained for five minutes until you break it, but you get weird looks for ordering a kids meal. When you go to a restaurant, you can’t ask for crayons without the host/hostess giving you a strange look. All the while you are thinking, “yes, I want a coloring page and a margarita…is that weird?”

Paying Bills

Before you started growing up, you didn’t have a real concept of money. You could spend all your money on things you wanted and didn't have to worry about paying the light bill. You could get your parents to drive you places and not have to worry about paying for gas or car insurance. Sure, getting cable, lights, and water is cool, but it's definitely not cool when you're having to pay for it (not to mention paying college tuition *shivers*). Plus, if your car breaks down, you have to pay to have it fixed or you won’t have a ride.

Having A Job

When you were a kid, you didn’t have to have a job (but you wanted one). You got to play all day and not have to worry about dealing with rude customers. You could switch careers with ease and not have to worry about how it would make your resume look. What are taxes?! They certainly didn’t get taken out of whatever money you made from your lemonade stand that you had in the summer. It wouldn’t be so bad if every job was like Dunder Mifflin and you had coworkers like Dwight and Michael, but of course that’s not the way of the real world.

The Movies/TV Shows Get Worse

Didn’t it seem like the TV shows when you were younger were just so much better? Cartoons especially. I hardly watch cartoons now, but I was flipping through channels and watched a few minutes of some newer cartoon the other day, and it was horrible. It was a disgrace to 90’s cartoons. It seems like people who create these shows are running out of ideas and so they've started recycling them. To top it all off, Bob Barker doesn’t host The Price is Right anymore (sad face), but I guess since Alex Trebek is still on Jeopardy, that's something.

Naps

You used to fight them when you were younger, and now you would give anything to feel the warm embrace of a good nap. A nap can change your whole day. Having a bad one? Take a nap, and its like waking up on a new and improved day. However, between work, school, and a social life, its hard to find time to take naps. If you have roommates or still live at home with a loud family, it can be especially difficult to take a good nap. Taking a good nap is rare. The only downside to being an adult and napping is that you have to make your own snack when you wake up.

You Can’t Throw A Tantrum In Public

No, not even if Starbucks' wifi isn’t working. You can’t throw a tantrum if you get bills in the mail or if you have to drive home from work in 5:00 traffic. You can’t throw a tantrum in the mall because you can’t afford to buy that cute shirt. I say you can’t but I guess you could… But let’s not be that person (I see it all the time, working in customer service).

Everyone Else Is Growing Up

You get on Facebook and it seems like everyday someone is either getting engaged, getting married, or having a baby, and you’re just trying to decide what new series to watch on Netflix. Everyone is moving out and getting their first homes. People are talking about politics and the economy, and you’re wondering where to order pizza from.

These are some of the things that suck about growing up, but it does have its perks, I suppose. You get tons more freedom. You get to pick what you eat for dinner. You can go to bed whenever. You can drive anywhere you need or want to go. It's inevitable and everyone has to get older, but growing up is just an option.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
