The University of Illinois received its own Snapchat story, and it is every student's personal goal to get their (max) 10 seconds of fame.
Snapchat is an app to temporarily share pictures and videos to other users, and Snapchat stories are a string of photos or videos shared by a user for 24 hours. The app has story features for special events or locations, with the University of Illinois being one of them.
Walking around campus, there are screams and jumps just in the efforts to be outrageous enough to make the story. Overhearing complaints of, “This made the story, but me dancing at Kam’s didn’t?” aren't coming to an end soon. Media is inherently changing human behavior just to gain attention from the public, and there is no saying whether it is for the better.
Because of Snapchat’s popularity, it is a momentous time for students and staff. The same public story students use to showcase their wild nights and study sessions represents the university to the public. Since the story is available to any user within the geographical confines, it reaches a vast demographic. The content on the Snapchat story will create a virtual stereotype, uncontrolled by university staff, for high school visitors, professors, parents, community members and fellow classmates.
While it is entertaining to broadcast campus events and various social activities, it is also important that people are monitoring what they post for the sake of themselves and the University of Illinois. In the midst of being named the number one party school, we would like to maintain a remotely innocent social media platform. But as times will reveal, students are presently more daring on social media. As technology socially advances, we hope their users do as well.
