Five Books To Reread This Summer

Ahh, middle school days... no quite children but not yet teenagers. The awkward fumbling around stage. Middle school is filled with many new experiences. This summer why not re-read a book that will take you back in time to the wonder years?

For middle-schoolers, literature is a big part of the curriculum, where we stopped having spelling tests every Friday and started learning how to write five-paragraph essays and respond to books with so much symbolism it was overwhelming. I have concocted a list of five books, that either I read or friends have read when they were in middle school that they remember loving. So if your in the market for a great book with quirky, deep, and moving characters, look no further.

The first book is the classic A Wrinkle in Time by author Madeline L'Engle. This book combines fantasy with some sci-fi but is definitely one of my memorable reads from middle school. The main character Meg, is definitely a great and unique character who goes on a unique adventure. And should it leave you thirsty for more, which it will, you're in luck because there are four additional books in the series.

The next book which I loved, loved, loved, was Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. This book was really amazing and also devastating for a six grader, to be honest. Jesse and Leslie, are two kids who create an imaginary world together to help ease their lives a bit. Truly a remarkable read.

The third book I chose was a more utopian book, The Giver by Louis Lowry. This follows the story of a young boy who in a society where everyone is ignorant to the truth is given a chance at truth, but he soon discovers that the truth is hardly an easy journey.

Next I chose the always classic, entirely ahead of it's time, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book takes place in the South and is in the viewpoint of a six-year-old girl. And it is a book that I hold near and dear to my heart. Be warned, this book is not for the criers or the weary-hearted; it talks about racism and discrimination in a way that was astounding to readers when first published.

This book follows Melinda Sordino's transition from middle schooler to high schoolers, and the evils of the world. Absolutely on of the best books I have ever read and one that really surprised my fellow classmates.

Those are the five books that I recommend; however if you're not much of a reader, all of the books are in motion pictures, and I recommend you check them out. Even though I'm a staunch believer that movies could never be a good as the books, it's better than sitting around watching reality TV all day!

Bruce Springsteen's Top 7 Lyrics

Everything Bruce says in his classic rock songs.

Anyone who was born and raised in New Jersey (or anywhere really) knows of Bruce Springsteen, whether or not they like him is a whole other situation. I hope that his hundreds of classic rock songs and famous high energy performances, even in his sixties he can put on better concerts than people half his age, are at least recognizable to people of all ages. Love him or hate him (I identify with the former) you have to admit that some of his songs and interviews have inspirational quotes and lyrics.
