Greensburg, Indiana has a population of almost 12,000 and is the definition of Small Town, USA. The town offers some pretty good donuts and a homey feel. It is a great place to grow up and raise a family and anyone that has lived here their entire life will know these 15 signs that prove they are truly from The Burg.
1. Stories is your go-to for pie.
Eating lunch at Stories and not eating a piece of pie afterward is impossible. Strawberry only comes around in the summer and you immediately check the pie rack when walking in hoping that they have started serving it.
2. You love El Reparo.
When you are in the mood for Mexican food, El Rep is your first option. You even wait for more than an hour on Fridays just for those chips and queso.
3. Every breath you draw is partially driven by your hatred for Batesville.
Every sporting event against Batesville turns you into an extremely competitive person and whoever wins is entitled to the bragging rights on social media for at least the next week.
4. Lincoln Street and Main Street have everything you need.
Between the two they contain one grocery store, a couple of gas stations, and just about every fast food restaurant in Greensburg.
5. You refer to Greensburg as the Tree City or The Burg.
Did you know we have a tree growing out of the courthouse tower? We do and we refer to our town as the Tree City mostly so that people will ask us why. The Burg needs no explanation.
6. It isn’t summer until you've had a pineapple whip from the Super Twist man.
An ice cream cone from the Super Twist man is the only thing that can get you through those hot summer days. Word spreads like wildfire when he shows up at Harvest Supermarket and you can feel sadness spread across town when he leaves each summer.
7. “Friday Night Lights” was a reality for you in high school.
Between basketball and football season you always have a sporting event to go to and pretty much the whole town is there so you feel as if you are missing out if you don’t go.
8. Basketball was a sport you tried at least once.
Basketball is kind of a big deal in Greensburg and your parents made you play at least one year of YMCA basketball and then let you quit when they realized you were in it for the snacks.
9. Cornerstone Bakery is the only place you get donuts.
You get up at 6 in the morning just to beat the line because come 9 o’clock the yeast donuts with the Oreo cookie icing that you love will be gone.
10. The county fair is a highlight of your summer.
It's mostly just a chance for you to people watch, ride the Ferris wheel once, and eat at the Optimist Booth every night of the week, but overall it’s one of the main events of the summer.
11. You know everyone.
Going to Walmart takes at least twenty extra minutes because you see your third grade English teacher, your old soccer coach, and three of your friend’s moms just in the frozen food section and of course you have to mingle and catch up on life.
12. You always go to the parades.
Whether you are in the parade or not, you go and sit on the hot curb, in the hot sun, until three little kids steal the candy that was clearly thrown in your direction.
13. You have been to the city pool at least once in your life.
You have been to the city pool and jumped off both diving boards and gone down the slide at least once. If you haven’t then you did your adolescent summers wrong.
14. Summer softball/baseball was the highlight of your elementary school days.
You didn’t particularly like the sport or that it was always 90 degrees during your games, but you always got snacks after the game and all of your friends were there so why not right? For you it was mostly a social event and if your team actually won that was an added bonus.
15. You have to drive an hour to do anything.
Going to the mall constitutes an entire day’s worth of activities because it takes you at least an hour to get there. Add the time you take to do your shopping, and of course, you get hungry so you will have to stop and eat on your way home.
