The Pros And Cons Of Summer Employment

The beginning of summer for college students can be characterized by empty potato chip bags, remote battery changes, and butt imprints in couches. However, there comes a time when you look at your bank account and scream like a little girl. It's in that moment that you realize you need a job. Even though the idea of getting a job results in many of us running and hiding under our childhood beds. There are some upsides to the world of employment. Don't get me wrong, every uphill has a downhill. Here's a few pros and cons you will face as you take on a summer job:

Pro: Gets your mom off of your back.

After a hundred times of your mom coming home and asking whether you've done something with your life other than lying on the couch eating leftovers, you can finally answer her text, "Are you still on the couch?" with "No Mom, I'm bringing home the bacon." Then don't forget to buy bacon on the way home from work, just to rub it in her face.

Con: You have to see anyone and everyone you know.

You thought you finally got away from everyone in high school. When you get a job in your town during the summer, you're basically signing up for a high school reunion followed by a game of twenty questions such as, "How was school?", "Any boys in your life?", "How's your family doing?", or "What's in that red solo cup in your Facebook picture?"

Pro: Gives you an excuse to miss boring activities.

Aw, I'm so sorry mom I can't go to Bingo night, I'm working. Oh, next week? Nope, sorry. Looks like I'm working again!

Con: Having to miss out on fun summer adventures.

While all of your friends are either climbing a mountain or chasing waterfalls, you are stuck inside living vicariously through their Snapchat stories, tweets, and Instagram pictures.

Pro: Gives you a glimpse of the real world.

You are more prepared for the eight hour work days and forty hour work weeks that you will face once you graduate college.

Con: Waking up early.

You haven't had to set your alarm to 8 A.M. since you accidentally registered for that 8 A.M. calculus class your first semester Freshman Year. Never made that mistake again.

Pro: Gives you a reason to drink coffee.

As if you aren't already addicted to caffeine, you can now drink as much coffee as you want without anyone judging you or telling you that you don't need another cup, because you now have something that requires your attention at very early hours!

Con: Having to wear a uniform.

With this summer heat, there's nothing more that you'd want to do other than walking in the beating sun in pants and a long sleeve, right?

Pro: Money

Finally, your bank account is back to a positive balance since you first started college.

Con: Having to talk and interact with people.

There's nothing worse than having to say, "Hi, how are you?" to every person that walks by you, let alone having to say it with a smile at the crack of dawn.

Pro: Did I mention money?

You can actually finance all of your college needs...your books of course.

Con: Less Netflix time.

Suddenly, you can't finish a whole season of a series in a day, it now takes two days!

So, what're you doing just sitting around on your parent's couch for the summer? Do something productive!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
