The Pros and Cons of Choices

It's just like any other morning on campus... until you spot one of those huge purple balloons flying next to Wilson.

Pro: JMU maintenance really steps up their game for Choices, the already beautiful campus gets a little extra love and we couldn't be more excited about it. Nothing tells you it's springtime quite like seeing a bed of purple tulips blooming on the sides of Wilson Hall. The grass mysteriously seems to get a bit greener, and for one day you're a little less likely to fall into the spaces where bricks have been carved out from the walkways of the quad.

Con: You didn't think the traffic and parking situation on campus could get much worse, but you were, oh, so wrong. The roads are full of eager prospective students and their parents who probably aren't sure exactly where they are going. Even when they find the convo parking lot, the wait to turn into it lasts far longer than the amount of time you allotted yourself to get to campus and you start to debate whether you'll make it to class at all. Also, if you are trying to catch a bus, you should probably just start walking, or maybe running.

Pro: The food in the dining halls is extra delicious for Choices. They have all of your favorite things all on the same day, and it doesn't get much better than that.

Con: It could get better than that, if you didn't have to wait in the longest line of your life just to get into e-hall. You have to take the risk of waiting in line just to get inside and find that they are out of everything you've been dreaming about all day.

Pro: You get to show off your love for the best school around. You might get a little nostalgic thinking about how the quad is no longer just a picture perfect piece of campus, it's the place where you spend your Thursday afternoons with your best friends. You will pass by tours and remember when you were the one being told to clap in the middle of the circle on the quad. You have come a long way since then, and as much as you might stress about the buses that aren't running on schedule, and the crowds of people lining the sidewalks, in reality you know that the chaos of Choices is more than worth it because odds are it helped you make one of the best decisions of your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
