Promise Me This

Promise me to never be afraid to share your opinion and stand up for what you believe in. These four years are a time of metamorphosis to the adult that you'll become. Promise to find your values and beliefs and use integrity every day.

Promise me you'll say “YES!" instead of "no." You won't become well-rounded without going to that improv show, toga party or learning how to shotgun a beer.

Promise me you'll take the time to do the things that you love. Take that extra psychology or women's studies class. Join a club that none of your posse is in. Choose a major, not for the income, but for the passion. Promise me you'll take the time to do the things you love.

Promise you'll skip class. Say “Screw it!" to your statistics class and feel the thrill of being (slightly) bad. Spend the extra time lying in bed, eating lunch with friends or getting a beer tower at the local bar.

Promise me you'll take time to enjoy the seasons. Watch the leaves turn from green to orange while you're walking to class. Find joy in the first snowfall, and find relief when the tulips finally bloom after a long winter. Promise you'll take in the sun and take pictures of campus' beauty.

Promise you'll have a dance floor make out. Come on, we can't be serious (and have integrity) all the time.

Promise me that as you lie in bed and try to determine what your next semester will look like, that you'll think of the big picture. Don't let your senior year be tough; overload your younger years so you'll have time to not worry your last semester. Promise that your senior year will be filled with easy classes and unforgettable moments.

Promise me that you'll spread my secret: the secret to life, to success, to your dreams, is effort. Promise that you'll make an effort. Do it during times of triumph, hardship and everything in between. It's a simple and sweet message, but you'll fail to remember it countless number of times. Promise to always make an effort.

Promise that when it's closing time, and you're being kicked out of your favorite bar, you'll take a pit stop at your favorite pizza place or bagel shop. Promise to enjoy it.

Promise to laugh, cry and hold your college friends tight. Don't let these four years slip away.

Promise me this: When I leave this place, my legacy will remain. Promise me that all of my hard work will not go unnoticed; that my sorority, student organization and younger generations will remember my name. For the life of you, do not let your seniors down. Promise that our legacy will remain.

Most of all, promise to love and honor the most beautiful campus there ever was, for forever and a day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
