Maybe it's because I go to school in a small town that finds itself at a complete lack of culture roughly 95% of the time. Maybe it's because I don't surround myself with the right people. I haven't figured out why (yet), but no one seems to know about the hidden treasure of comedy that is Portlandia. (It's a show, in case you had to be that guy and ask.) Combining five of my favorite things--Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Portland, satire, and sketch comedy--Portlandia is the show to watch if you have any ounce of interesting in your poor, little body.
Why am I so obsessed, you ask? What makes this show so amazing? I'll explain.
The concept: a satirical portrayal of Portland, Oregon and all of its urban, yuppie/hipster hybrid inhabitants. Think of everything that you think you'd find in a hip town like Portland, exaggerate the mannerisms and trends, throw Fred and Carrie in the mix and boom. Magic.
My problem: Feeling the constant need to quote lines from movies and t.v., I find my one-liners and quotes from Portlandia episodes met with silence and strange looks because the people I surround myself with fail to explore and educate themselves with anything that isn't spoon fed and overly-advertised to them. (Yes, I'm talking to you, Gossip Girl and any other show that is accompanied by too many GIF-filled lists of "Why you and your BFF are totes Serena and Blair" or quizzes to find out just how compatible you and Chuck Bass are.) I get it, I really do. I, too, enjoy Gossip Girl. People like what they know is good. Well, Portlandia is good. It's better than good, actually--it's genius.
I could include pictures and GIFs from the show's sketches. I could quote some of my favorites or list my top five characters, but I won't. I'll save it in my back pocket for later. Because you people obviously don't get it--yet. So, go watch it. Right now. If you don't find it amusing, or clever, or brilliant: congratulations, you just passed the first part of the "I'm never going to be friends with Morgan" quiz.
