Here are some of the pet peeves of a cashier. I experience most of these on a daily basis. Tragic, right?
1. Boob Money
This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I'm sorry if you think your bra is a valid place of storage. If anything, it is unsanitary and gross. You might as well be giving me a piece of paper that marinated in sewage. For someone that has boobs, I know that with the things that occur (sweat and maybe even dried milk—yes, I went there), there is no sanitary value to keeping money in your bra. Secondly, as a cashier, I do not want to see someone digging down her shirt to get money and putting it back when they are done. So the next time you want to hand a cashier your boob money, please just don’t. If you must, I have hand sanitizer close by.
2.“You must be new.”
Just because I cannot go against my policy or you “get this here all the time,” it does not qualify me as new. I cannot make miracles happen. I am someone who values and needs my job, so no, I am not going to bend the rules for you. It amazes me how people that come into the same gas station every day think that just because I changed my hair that "oh, she must be new." No, I'm not. You saw me yesterday.
3. Yes, I have to ID you.
This is the law, guys. It is not worth me going to jail, paying a major fine or losing my job simply because you are too young to purchase beer or tobacco. It also amazes me how mad some get for asking the question, “Do you have ID?” For some, this should be seen as a compliment, right? You’re 30, but you don’t even look 18. I'm sorry, but asking for you ID ensures my job. It ensures that I am not doing anything illegal, and if you are underage, you're going to be declined. Seriously, I wish people would realize you have all of your adult life to engage in these life choices, and if not, don’t put me at risk because you cannot wait.
4. “Can you cash my check?”
At the convenience store that I work at, I get asked multiple times a day if I can cash a check. The answer is simple: we have a list of companies that I am allowed to take a check from, and even then I have the right to deny you if I do not have the money, if I do not feel comfortable cashing the check or for any other reason. I really hate hearing, “I get them cashed here all the time.” For me this causes a problem due to the fact that some people are willing to bend the rules. Also, if my manager chooses to cash your check, that's great; however, that is my manager. I am just a mere cashier trying to earn a paycheck. I'm not wiling to put said paycheck at risk for your bad check. Sorry. In all honesty, cashing checks is one of the most stressful parts of my job. It dealing with large lump sums of money and a check is not a comfortable thing for me personally, and I really hate the experience.
