The Idea Of Perfection

I woke up like this.. Not.

The Idea Of Perfection
Celine Diong

"Oh my gosh. Have you seen her Instagram? It's like, perfect."

Sound familiar?

Society has created such a ridiculous idea of perfection that all of us try to live up to every single day. We feel like we have to look and act a certain way. We're compelled to exercise, wax, pluck, tuck. One thing I will never be able to understand is how people manage to correlate the perfect butt with the perfect life. Since when does the "aesthetic" of someone's social media posts define who they are? I guess it doesn't matter what kind of a personality you have as long as your Insta page is straightFIRE, fam.

Seeing all these famous people on mass media who always have just the right amount of "I woke up like this" bedhead and perfectly airbrushed features.. Who wouldn't wanna be them, right? Wrong. I'm gonna let you in on a dirty little secret. Nobody just wakes up contoured for the gods. Gasp! Never saw that coming!

No one's perfect. (Surprise, surprise) Everyone strives for perfection everywhere they go. I wake up every morning ready to be what society renders as 'perfect'. To be able to handle myself gracefully in all situations. I run around all day trying to be the perfect friend, the perfect daughter, the perfect student that sometimes I forget who I really should be trying hard to please. The One who fearfully and wonderfully made me in Hisperfectimage.

Truth be told, I don't think that I would have any idea who I am without my flaws. I really do think that there is beauty in our imperfections. That they are what sets us apart from everybody else. What makes us, us. The perfectly imperfect people that we are.

One thing that we always have to remember is that we will never be good enough for the world. Wanna know why? Because that requires being able to meet absurdly high standards that I sincerely believe will eventually be the death of humanity. People are dying all around the world and we get nervous over our Instagram feed- which is literally a fabricated version of ourselves?

Don't forget- you are under NO obligation to conform under society's standards. Stop stressing yourself out by trying to be "perfect" all the time. So eat that cookie. Wear those shoes. Get that haircut. Wing your days like you wing your eyeliner, because honestly? Y-O-L-O. ( I'll go home)

There is so much more to you than hashtags, filters and 24 hour Snapchat stories.

Love yourself, because being comfortable in your own skin is the most beautiful thing of all.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
