An Open Letter To My Past Self
Hanna Akpan

Dear Past Hanna,

It is July 15, 2016 and holy crap, what a year it has been. Where do I start? You have accomplished so much. Let's start from the beginning. You finished high school. That's a pretty big milestone if I do say so myself. You got to have the time of your life while in high school senior year. You got on homecoming court and even prom court (you're still not sure how, but you did). You had the best times during senior year and even hard times.

One great time about high school you experience would have to be getting your admission into the University of Tennessee. You were sitting in English class when all of a sudden your phone showed a email saying "you're in!" After doing research and figuring out the cost of everything you're going to college (out of state too!) which is pretty exciting! Plus during this whole time you have meet a few new friends along the way.

You and your roommate have been talking about dorm stuff and so far you two seem to have a lot in common. And you're so excited to finally meet her! You have also meet some many new people who have impacted your life for the better and you have also changed as person as well. You have also done a lot of adult things. From traveling from Knoxville all the way back to Atlanta on a Megabus all by yourself was pretty scary, but you did it! ( And would do it again if we are being honest here.)

You're even going back up for three weeks to get a head start on school because you're so excited for the fall season. Especially once you get UTK in the fall. You're excited about the football games and joining a few clubs on campus (especially this Business Frat). You're excited to cheer Rocky Top starting Sept 1. You are even excited for classes.

You're even excited to start on you second book (you have the title and everything!) You are still writing because you realized it is something you are very passionate about and want to keep doing as long as possible. You have so many dreams, ideas, and goals for this year and you have done almost half of them. I know when the new school year starts more will be added on to that list and you're excited. You will miss your hometown and the people who you grown up with, but you are so happy and excited for the next four years. Plus this is the happiest you have ever been this year then ever before. You have done some many amazing thing and I couldn’t be more proud of you Hanna, and I can’t wait to see what’s up next. Good luck with Freshman year! I know you will do great things!

Yours truly,

Future Hanna

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
