Pantone, the “global color authority,” began selecting their color of the year in 2000. The first color was cerulean, a futuristic color reflecting the entry into the new millennium. From thereon the color was carefully curated from a team who scoured the globe in search of next year's hit. The color reflects where the world is headed, what the fashion industry will likely be utilizing, and how advertisements will likely target audiences.
2016 selected for the first time two colors: “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity.” This duality of colors reflected a lot of what was going on in the world: a blending feminine and masculine, a duality of warm and cool, and a feeling of order in a year with a lack of it. The color strongly influenced various aspects of the visual world, through Drake’s “Hotline Bling” cover, the rise of these pastel hues featured in many a wedding. The rose gold iPhone that was introduced at the end of 2015 when the colors were introduced, as well as other objects in the hue, gained extreme popularity in the past year.
The rose gold iPhone was widely popular amongst men and women, mirroring the inferred fluidity of gender the two colors symbolized. Following suit in 2016, gender barriers were constantly torn down through male and female models working with gendered fashion lines that were not branded towards the one they identified with. Covergirl named James Charles (peep his soft pink eye shadow) a new face of the brand after he created a name for himself as a makeup guru of Instagram and Youtube, and transgender girl Aver Jackson appeared on the cover of National Geographic.
The pantone color is selected to simplify where they believe the world is headed, to show direction in a future sometimes lacking some. This year, the color can symbolize more than ever. “Greenery” is the 2017 color of the year. As stated by Pantone it is meant to “revive, restore, and renew;” doesn’t this seem fitting after the turbulent year we have had?
Green evokes the environment, something people have more cause to fear the impact of after President Elect Trump named Scott Pruitt, a denier of climate change, to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Green is a color to soothe the worries of those in the world after such a tumultuous year, but this shade is invigorating, inciting action as it calms you.
So begin your hunt. Get ready for your Instagram moment by buying a statement piece in the color, find a cafe that serves great green tea lattes so you can snag a pic, take your camera with you on a hike to look for the hue. Who knows where 2017 will lead us, but we all could use some tranquility after the year we've had.
