Pansy Division formed in the early nineties by Jon Ginoli. Ginoli was into punk rock and found himself isolated from the local gay scene. Surrounded by dance music and show tunes, he set out to find other gay men who shared his passion. The goal of the band was also to have a gay presence among a predominantly heterosexual genre of music.
The result was a band that made music as unfiltered and direct as possible. Giving a voice to many gay men, Pansy Division touched on topics like sex, politics, relationships, and dating. Here are their ten best songs.
10. Political Asshole
This track embodies the rage so many gay men feel when our sexuality is used as political tools.
9. Dirty Young Man
Sung from the perspective of an older man, this track proves that age is just a number.
8. Vicious Beauty
We've all been bullied and sometimes those bullies find a way back into our adulthood.
7. Bad Boyfriend
If you've been a bad boyfriend, it's best to take responsibility and own it. This song helps you do just that.
6. Luv Luv Luv
Pop music can sometimes send out this misleading, fairy tale depiction of love. This song attempts to break that mold.
5. Groovy Underwear
If you've ever had a fetish for underwear, this is your song.
4. Some Of My Best Friends
Written and sung by Joel Reader, the first straight member of the band, this song shows that it's okay for straight people to defend their gay friends.
3. Blame The Bible
From the band's most recent album, "Quite Contrary," this song is timely in an age where "religious freedom" has become a topic of discussion.
2. I Really Wanted You
A straight friend (and crush) not only gets into a relationship, but gets engaged, and heartbreak ensues. If you're a gay man, you've been there. This song is for you. This video was aired once on the MTV show, "120 Minutes."
1. Fem In A Black Leather Jacket
Taken from their debut album, this song talks about the sexiness in guys that don't fit the stereotypical masculine mold.
