Opening Myself To Forgiveness Made Me A Better Person

At first, Forgiveness may look like something out of an “Alien vs. Predator” movie. It will pay you a visit at one point and you will probably crap your pants peeking through your bedroom window thinking “why me, WHY ME?"

However, it may not be the first time Forgiveness has wound up on your doorstep. You may remember the time when your little brother or sister broke the porcelain vase in your living room and pointed the finger at you.

There was the time ‘Big Jimmy’ accidentally spilled his chili special on your favorite sundress at lunch.

And Let's not forget the good old "Where's the $20 bucks you owe me when Golden State won ROB?"

You might not remember Forgiveness during those times because you might've been too young to decipher it's horrid looks and instead cherished the kindness and solitude it provided for you. Children have this special gift of seeing past imperfection.

Unfortunately, as we grow older, these instances become more stressful and difficult to handle.

Remember when your friend "borrowed" your Honda Civic for groceries and rear-ended a Toyota at the first traffic light he saw?

Even worse, your fourth boyfriend/girlfriend had caught feelings for someone else in the middle of the relationship.

During these hard times, we may choose to ignore Forgiveness knocking at our door. We as humans are sometimes so stressed out we block out the very thing trying to help us.

I decided to open the door one day and as any true black man would do in a horror flick, I ran for my life first and asked questions later. It was Forgiveness standing at the door, hideous, appalling, and looked ready to eat me alive.

After my incessant screeching, I heard Forgiveness probably say something along the lines of "bleg glebaheeeeeee" and came inside to give me a hug. Perplexed, I let Forgiveness come in and we talked about some of my life issues. Forgiveness was supportive, caring, mild-tempered, and smelled atrocious. We played some board games and shared some advice, which included “Kloed” (Peace), “Haha baba” (Happiness), “Uuuurb” (Love) and my personal favorite “SkweeeeeEEEEEEEEE” (Commitment).

I now understood what it meant to forgive. It takes diligence, perseverance, heart (a lot of it), and most importantly, sacrifice. Being able to emotionally put yourself on the line for the people that mean the most to you is always a big risk, but it was one I had to take to find true peace within myself. I was able to fix friendships, get back together with my girlfriend, and was able to relieve the stress held in my mind for so long. There aren't many times in life when the alien life form we call Forgiveness stops by but when it does, please consider inviting forgiveness inside. All I had to do was open the door.... and that made all the difference.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
