An Open Letter To My Random Roommate Who Became My Forever Friend

Sometimes you choose your friends, and sometimes they choose you too.

An Open Letter To My Random Roommate Who Became My Forever Friend

I have always heard stories about people’s college roommates becoming their best friend. This was something that I always thought of as more of a fairy tale out of a storybook. It would be cool but probably not likely to happen.

I met you on the same day that we moved in. Kind of sketchy, not gonna lie. I wasn’t sure if you would be crazy, and it made me a little nervous. But I remember meeting you, and automatically noticing that you were the kind of person who would make me feel like our dorm room was a home. So thank you for:

1. Accepting me everyday for who I am.

2. Listening to me freak out about changing my schedule the first few weeks of college.

3. Trying new churches and things with me the first few weeks.

4. Learning my quirks and habits faster than anyone else ever has.

5. Loving all my quirks and habits, the good and the bad.

6. Understanding my messiness even though you are a neat freak.

7. Doing my laundry and dishes because when it comes to cleaning I am a lost cause.

8. Laughing at me and sharing in my sadness when a boy was stupid, or I felt like nothing was going right.

9. All of the advice. You should seriously write a book.

10. The late night Steak N’ Shake runs, so we could get fat together.

11. Doing random dance parties with me.

12. Understanding the importance of retail therapy.

13. Leaving me random notes of encouragement.

14. The gym dates and commons trips.

15. Understanding that I am in no way, shape, or form a morning person.

16. Watching endless amounts of Netlfix, and eating lots of terribly unhealthy foods with me.

17. Moving my mattress into your room before I got home so that we could be even closer than we already were. We made some pretty bomb forts.

18. Loving me through the mistakes I made and for being there for me when nobody else would.

19. Screaming songs at the top of your lungs with me in the car, for talking about Jesus with me, and for being the weirdest version of yourself with me. And for letting me be the weirdest version of myself.

20. And lastly, thank you for being not only my roommate but my best friend.

You didn’t have a choice when it came to living with me, but I’m glad your heart told you to become like a sister to me. I can't imagine life without you.

Having to start living with someone you barely know is a weird adjustment. It can turn out really badly or really well. I was lucky enough to get one of the best roommates to ever walk this planet. So thank you for making not only my college experience better, but my life in general so much more joyful and full. I cannot wait to experience so many more things in life with you by my side. One day when we are standing together at our weddings, we will remember all the late nights singing Michael Jackson and eating Ramen, and we will wish we could go back just for a moment.

Lots and lots of love,

Steph

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
