An Open Letter To Puerto Rico's Government

Puerto Ricans have a few things to say to our public servants.

An Open Letter To Puerto Rico's Government

To Whom It May Concern:

I am not going to bother with my name because I will be representing all Puerto Ricans. As we all know, Puerto Rico is currently living in a period of time that has pushed us towards a turning point in history. To default or not default, to educate or not educate, to have water or not have water, to leave or to stay… these are daily thoughts every single Puerto Rican living in this day and time has. With the apparent never-ending drought and the constant rise of prices on any form of goods, Puerto Rico is becoming an impossible place to live in. But does that mean we should just abandon ship and let someone else take care of it? Some people have found no other escape, but some people have realized that now is the time to pick up the ashes and turn this around. But the only way we will be able to do this is with the help of all of you, the public servants that were elected by us, the people. What do we want from you? It’s quite simple:

1. Stop trying to distract us from the problem.

When in the history of history has avoiding the problem made it go away? We continue to be bombarded by frivolous news about celebrities and hangouts, while there are a lot of questions that are still unanswered. Nelson Mandela once said, “No country can really develop unless its citizens are educated.” So, I stand here and beg you to EDUCATE US. Let us know what decisions you are making and why you are making them. Trust me, it will save you a lot of trouble and it will help us have a better understanding of the situation. Not only that, but we might (and possibly will) be a good resource to help solve our problems.

2. Incentivize us to roll up our sleeves and fight for our country.

There’s nothing more demoralizing than governing people that don’t want to do anything for their country. Give us a reason to fight! If there’s something that every Puerto Rican can relate to, it is their pride whenever the Puerto Rican name is spoken. Now, how do you use that to our country’s advantage? Stop telling us we are not capable of something -- give us the tools we need to accomplish it. If our public servants don’t believe in their people, how the hell are we supposed to move forward?

3. And finally, STOP THE POLITICAL PARTY WAR.

If there’s something that infuriates us, the people that elected you, is this constant disagreement and lack of prioritization between the two main political parties. When one party decides to do something right, the other one does everything in its power to tear it down. Why? You need to stop acting like children and realize that the only reason you are where you are is because of the people who elected you. If you continue fomenting and participating in this ridiculous war, you continue to affect the people. Therefore, we not only ask, but we demand that you forget about the meaningless opposition and focus on the betterment of our country TOGETHER. We, the people of Puerto Rico, have a lot of potential and it would be a shame that it is completely wasted because the leaders that represent us are focusing on the wrong issues.

We, the people of the beautiful Island of Puerto Rico, have given you the power to represent us and we can take it away as well. Therefore, I will leave you with a question for all of you to answer: If the people you’re representing are not the priority, then why are you a public servant?

Cordially,

The People of Puerto Rico

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
