Ohioans And Snow: Mixed Feelings

Hi snow, we have missed you...sort of.

Picture this: You are on your phone while eating breakfast and you start reading weather updates from the local news stations posting that snow is on its way. Naturally with being an Ohioan, that just goes in one ear and out the other because if they call for snow, it could potentially be the nicest day this winter, no one knows. It's not our faults, we grew up learning that just because the TV or radio says it's going to snow, rain, hail or storm, that Ohio could change its mind within five minutes simply because it's Ohio.

Then about an hour later you look out the window and see the truth. It finally happened. Snow hit Ohio and it actually stuck around this time. You are still in disbelief, so you go back on your phone and check Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, only to find out that this is not a dream, there really is snow outside because everyone is putting up pictures of it. With the winter Ohio has had so far, none of us can really complain about the weather since it has been in the 40-50 degree range a lot (this is nothing compared to last years frigid arctic circle). Now, Ohioans are realizing that the snow is here, and the snow is going to stay... let the mixed feelings of winter commence. Here are some things that all Ohioans probably have heard within the last 48 hours:

1. "We are totally having a snow day tomorrow!" (Probably not, this is just the beginning—we haven't seen nothing yet.)

2. "OMG, I love this snow, so beautiful." (It looks even more beautiful when it is gone...how many months til summer?)

3. "This snow is making me want to listen to Christmas songs now." (Please, no more Christmas music—just no, not gonna happen.)

4. "Hey look, a salt truck!" (Don't remind me, this is just a definite sign that the snow is just getting comfortable.)

5. "Ugh, I hate the snow, I want to move somewhere warm." (Trust me, we all do...it's the love/hate relationship with Ohio.)

6. "Let's take a picture in the first snowfall of the season!" (Or not. I am pale, have dry skin, and I am just a little grumpy today because of the cold...let's take a picture in seven months, though!)

7. "I wish it was winter all year long." (Excuse me?)

8. "Yay, it is finally snowing, now I can wear my new pea coat!" (Uhm, what? As soon as I saw that snow stick to the ground, I went to go dig out my old snowsuit.)

Ohio is one of those states where we have the opportunity to experience all the seasons within a year, and that is what makes Ohio great. We all may complain during every season but if we dislike the weather so much then why are we still here? Ohio offers too many great adventures and memories to be made—the weather is just one of those things that makes those memories into stories that we will tell our grandchildren one day. We still love you, Ohio!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
