Sure, you can say, "reality TV is dumb and I don't watch it" or "I have better things to do with my time," and yeah, maybe you aren't religiously keeping up with the Kardashians, but you can't say you didn't tune in even a little when Caitlyn Jenner went through her transition, or when Lamar Odom overdosed and Khloe rushed to his rescue. While we all would like to claim that we are above watching stupid shit, that has absolutely zero relevance to reality, Donald Trump's increasing popularity in the Presidential race says otherwise. Similar to our inability to stop watching Kim Kardashian as she inevitably says something extremely irrelevant or incredibly shallow, Americans aren't paying attention to Trump because his policies are gold and his personality is sparkling, we're giving him attention because we can't help not to. He first achieved our attention because of his wealth and now he's maintaining it with his obscenity.
Even people with the utmost hatred for him are still watching his speeches and googling his stories because they're so intrigued by what he'll do or say next. This response then leads to networks giving him more air time because, believe it or not, that's what we all want to see. Because of this, the other republicans running are basically cemented between two options: keep quiet and fall in the shadow of Trump, or act just as crude and disrespectfully. To be honest, we can't really blame them because that seems to be the kind of behavior we are rewarding. GOP debates are turning into a reality TV show of their own. Insults reaching as low as bashing the size of each other's "hands." While reality TV is entertaining at times and often hard to tear your eyes away from, it should not be the model for which a Presidential campaign is based on. If this is how we as Americans continue to respond, what will be next?
A reality TV show about the life of the President? The respect that we would lose as a country if Donald Trump became president would be insurmountable. Just imagine Trump meeting with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, for example, and not only failing to correctly pronounce his name, but also somehow managing to insult and disrespect everything the Prime Minister stands for. How can someone as bigoted as Donald Trump manage to cooperate and compromise with any foreign country when his solution to illegal immigration in America is simply to build a giant wall? I also can't say that I would want someone who is morally okay with making fun of a disabled reporter to be the next President of the United States. This is where we have to draw the line (that really shouldn't even have to be drawn in the first place) between edgy entertainment and professionalism. Are actions like these really making America great again or are they just disrespectful and a ploy to keep the media's attention? I don't know about you, but I think Donald Trump should stick to TV that doesn't directly affect our livelihood, and leave the position of the President of the United States to literally anyone else.
