Election day is right around the corner and, not surprisingly, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have been in the news now more than ever. But, while the election is at the forefront of most Americans’ minds, life hasn’t stopped in the U.S. or the rest of the world. Here is a list of major events that have happened recently you may have missed while listening to Trump talk about grabbing women and reading about Clinton’s email debacle.
1. Samsung messed up
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s August release was explosive. Literally. Several people reported the phone catching fire. Samsung’s engineers thought the problem was caused by faulty batteries and continued to distribute the device with batteries from a different supplier, according to The New York Times’ report. The company still received reports that devices were exploding and Samsung announced it was completely discontinuing the device Tuesday, Oct. 11. The phone has been banned by select airlines worldwide.
2. North Carolina got messed up
Reuters reported that Hurricane Matthew resulted in the death of 26 people in North Carolina and $1.5 billion worth of damage. The hurricane caused over a foot of water to be deposited in inland North Carolina. Of course, Haiti experienced incredible loss and damages. Reuters reported Monday, Oct. 10 that 1,000 people died in Haiti from the storm.
3. Wells Fargo's CEO quit
The financial services company announced Wednesday, Oct. 12 that John G. Stumpf, chief executive and chairman, was stepping down, according to The Washington Post. This announcement was in response to reports that thousands of the company’s employees created fake accounts to meet quotas.
4. Bob Dylan won a Nobel Prize
It was announced Thursday, Oct. 13 that the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the popular singer and songwriter Bob Dylan. The Nobel Prize tweeted that Dylan received this recognition "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."
