This past week there was this little, tiny election that people are not really talking about at all, so it won’t be included in this list of five major events that happened within the last seven days.
In all seriousness, since every major media outlet completely covered the presidential election, here is what happened around the world during that same time.
1. Janet Reno dies
Reno was the attorney general under President Bill Clinton’s administration from 1993-2001. She was the first female attorney general.
Reno is known for overseeing the conviction of Ted Kaczynski, also known as the “Unabomber”, and her role in the Waco standoff.
She died at the age of 78 after battling Parkinson’s disease on November 7.
2. The possible organizer of the Paris and Brussels attacked was identified.
The Associated Press reported on Tuesday, Nov. 8 that Oussama Ata, a Belgian, is the possible organizer of the Paris attacks that took place November 2015 and the Brussels attacks that took place in March.
These attacks killed a total of 162 people and were linked to ISIS. Officials wished to remain anonymous because it is an ongoing investigation and Brussels prosecutors did not comment.
3. Leonard Cohen died
Remember the song “Hallelujah”? Over 300 artists have covered it since Leonard Cohen first recorded the song, which he also wrote, in 1984. He was well known for his successful career as a singer-songwriter.
His label, Sony Music Canada, confirmed his death at the age of 82 on his Facebook page on Thursday, Nov. 10.

4. Four Americans died in Afghanistan
Two service members and two contractors died early Saturday, Nov. 12 after a suicide bomb attack, which the Taliban claimed responsibility for. CNN reported the attack took place at a sports ground at Bagram Airfield where officers and soldiers are known to exercise.
CNN also reported security is being investigated at the base to figure out how the attacker got into the area.
5. New Zealand got rocked – by an earthquake
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook New Zealand’s south island early Monday morning local time. The earthquake took place northeast of Christchurch, according to BBC News, and two people were reported dead as a result of it.
This is an unfortunate repeat for Christchurch, which suffered from a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in February 2011. This earthquake was responsible for the deaths of 185 people.
