Music Is A Safe Place

It isn't about what you listen to. It's about where you go while you're listening.

There is no denying that there is no better feeling than hearing your favorite song come on during a time in your life where you were feeling down.

Music is what makes the world go 'round. Music is more than just 'music.' Music is a best friend to those who are feeling lonely. Music is a hand to hold when you are scared to go down the dark tunnels of life. Music is a safe place for those who are feeling as if they have nowhere to go. Music is what keeps people sane.

No matter what genre you listen to, take a step back and look at the music that you keep in your life. Think about those times where you felt like you needed a break from the world; a time where you put your headphones in, turned up the volume and forgot your troubles. Music has been there for people when actual people weren't.

We all have a difference in opinion when it comes to the types of music we listen to. Some people are interested in classic rock, hip hop, r&b, pop punk and even heavy metal. No matter what your preference is, the feelings you get when you listen to your favorite artist surpasses the differences each genre holds. Music brings people together; people of different races, cultures and even different music tastes.

It's not hard to lose yourself in the music you blast through your car speakers, or the songs you can preform a perfectly timed duet to with your best friend. Music is everywhere, and if we try to get away from it, we would probably drive ourselves crazy. Music takes us to a whole new world (even if you aren't singing the Aladdin soundtrack).

If music is so important, why does everyone feel the need to judge others based on the music they listen to? So what if someone doesn't listen to the same genre as us? Who cares if they would rather rock out to Carrie Underwood, while you'd rather air guitar to Blink-182? We don't know what that person has gone through in their life. What they are struggling with currently or what they were struggling with months ago. No matter what they have gone through, what we do know is that music was there for them. The music you are judging probably helped keep that smile on their face. That music probably saved them more times than they'd like to count. Music isn't just our own personal safe place, but it's also the safe place to the people around us.

Next time you are getting ready to listen to your favorite artist, take a step back and appreciate all the times that music was there for you, and never let anything or anyone tear down your safe place.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
