By the time the powerful Clinton machine made it to the White House in January of 1993, most millennials were far too young to understand their significance. Understandably, most young voters have not yet heard or read about the prowess and the corruption of the Clinton political machine. In this guide, a young voter will be able to read about basic information regarding the countless scandals and corrupt dealings of Bill and Hillary Clinton. It is important to note this does not discuss current scandals such as Emailgate, Benghazi, or dealings with the Clinton Foundation. During the campaign, it is unlikely to get the following information from MSNBC.
In no particular order...
Whitewater
While our parents were rocking parachute pants in the 1980s, the Clintons were investing money in the Whitewater Development Corporation. Ultimately, the corporation went under for illegal accounting and other illegal transactions involving the Clintons. Throughout long and tenuous investigations, the Clintons were subpoenaed to testify before a Grand Jury regarding the legality of their dealings with Whitewater. It was eventually discovered the Clintons pressured Arkansas businessmen David Hale and Kenneth Star into illegally contributing to the Whitewater Corporation and Bill Clinton's campaign committee. In the end, fifteen people associated with the Clintons would be convicted on a litany of federal corruption charges...except the Clintons. This would not be the first time the public was concerned over a lack of criminal charges against a Clinton. In the final hours of his presidency, Bill Clinton would pardon four of the fifteen associates convicted. Years later, Hillary Clinton would again come under investigation for the role of the Rose Law Firm, to which Hillary was a partner. Billing records pertaining to the Whitewater case would "go missing" followed by little cooperation from the First Lady. In 1996, it would be discovered Hillary Clinton frequently met with key figures in the scandal, invalidating her previous claim.
Travelgate
In 1993, Hillary orchestrated the firing of officials in the White House travel office and replaced these officials with a traveling firm with close ties to the Clintons. Investigations into the firings deflected responsibility from the president to the First Lady. It would be uncovered that Hillary made several false statements to investigators, but she went unpunished for her role in the scandal.
Vince Foster suicide
In 1993, Deputy White House Counsel and close ally of Hillary Clinton, Vincent Foster committed suicide along the Potomac River outside of Washington D.C. This is a touchy subject for many reasons. First, it is not as universally well believed that the Clintons were involved in any wrongdoing regarding his death. However, the circumstances and alleged Clinton coverup is reasonably suspicious. Second, several independent investigations consistently ruled his death a suicide. Third, he was a key figure in the Whitewater scandal. The controversy stems from the removal of files from his office, just hours after his death, to the office of Hillary Clinton's Chief of Staff to a vault in the White House, and finally to the personal attorneys of Hillary's Chief of Staff. To add fuel to the preverbal fire, lead investigator and U.S. Attorney Miguel Rodriguez suspected Foster had a second gunshot wound to the neck and was murdered. He wrote in his resignation, "As an ethical person, I don’t believe I could be involved in what they were doing.”
John Huang, Charlie Trie, and Johnny Chung
All three were Clinton fundraisers who illegally solicited and transferred campaign contributions from foreign entities to the Democratic National Committee and Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign. All three were convicted of charges from tax evasion to campaign finance violations. All three were friends and associates of the Clintons. Even today, the Clintons are still accused of soliciting illegal contributions from foreign governments and entities via the Clinton Foundation.
Paid speeches to Wall Street banks
Since the Clintons left the White House in 2001, Hillary Clinton gave paid speeches to several Wall Street banks averaging around $600,000 per speech. This does not have much to do with corruption or illegality, but more with her morality and honesty. She claims to be a friend of the middle class, yet has uncomfortably close ties to the men and women who ruined the housing market and caused the Great Recession. For many families it may take years to accumulate $600,000 but Hillary "friend of the little man" Clinton made it in an hour while wearing clothes and jewelry worth as much as many people's paychecks.
Pantsuits on fire
"I did not have sexual relations with that woman." "I did not send nor receive classified information on a private server". "I remember landing in Bosnia with our heads covered under a barrage of sniper fire."
I hope this guide helps tell the story of two of the most corrupt and crooked political figures in modern history. A story you may not have heard and may not hear ever again.
