I'm sure we've all seen what a painted rock looks like, whether it's in a gift shop or on social media. However, all around the world, many people are finding painted rocks when they are out and about. Why? It's simple: people want to brighten someone's day.
This all started with the Kindness Rocks Project in Cape Cod by a Megan Murphy. At first, she had only been painting on rocks and leaving them places as a hobby. However, when she started receiving messages about how much finding the rocks meant to people, she realized it could become something much more.
Megan encourages people to join the efforts in making someone's day in any way you can. Painting rocks isn't for everyone, but being nice certainly is.
Anyone can join the Kindness Rocks Project - in fact, many people are making new organizations that have the same idea. In Brevard County, there is a Pay-It-Forward Facebook page which has over 1200 members. The principle is the same: to paint rocks. However, these rocks don't have to be inspirational quotes.
Not only does this project promote kindness, but it also inadvertently promotes outside activity. I have friends who'll go out of their way to go walking in a park just so they can find these rocks. In fact, in Indian River County, when you find these rocks, you are supposed to re-hide them to keep spreading the act of kindness around.
You don't have to be an artist to paint a rock. I'm not even remotely close to being able to draw a proper heart, but that isn't what the project is about.
So next time you're bored sitting at home, perhaps join in spreading happiness and make your mark. A little joy can go a long way.
