Dear seniors,

I was in your shoes less than a year ago. I know that all of you just want to get the f**k out of high school, but now I wish I didn’t. I wish I didn’t take everything for granted. I wish I slowed down enough to realize how lucky I was to have such an amazing group of people, both teachers and students, around me every day. I wish I didn’t let the time fly by. I wish I had a second chance to go back and redo it. Everyone looks forward to college and can’t wait for the freedom that comes with going away to school, so we try to make the time in high school pass quickly. So many people say that high school and college are the greatest years of your life, but we’re so busy always looking towards the next big thing that we forget this. High school seems so so so long when you’re just a little freshman, but it’s true what they say: it really does go by in the blink of an eye.

Here’s some advice from the washed-up high school grad who didn’t really appreciate those 4 years. Go to the football game everyone is talking about. Don’t say that you’re tired and that there will always be another one.

Make the most of your classes; it may seem dumb, but you’re going to get to college and realize that the teachers you had in high school cared way more about you than your college professors ever will.

Go out with your friends, but don’t forget to spend time with the people who love you the most, your family.

Go to prom. It may not be the best night of your life, but you’ll regret it if you don’t.

Get sleep, but don’t sleep through your 4 years of high school.

There’s definitely more advice I have, but these were the biggest things I took for granted. I wish I did more in high school and was more outgoing, but that’s not how things worked out for me and that’s okay too. I don’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunities I did because I was too shy and didn’t feel like going with the crowd. It’s okay to go with the crowd sometimes, as long as you remain true to yourself. You never get a second chance at anything, so slow down, relax, and enjoy the time before graduation, because trust me, it will be over before you want it to.

Love,

A washed-up high school grad

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
