I feel like I might be one of the few people in college that actually loves living in the dorms. Before coming to college, all I heard about the dorms were horror stories. They were supposed to be really run down and small, and most people that I talked to didn't really enjoy living with their roommate. I was expecting very little when I moved into the dorms last August, but looking back now, I can honestly say that living in the dorms is one of my favorite things about college.
I will admit, the dorms are not the most glamorous place to live. My dorm is old. Like, so old that there are a lot of rooms that don't meet code so they are locked up. Yeah. That old. It's not the most beautiful, and it doesn't have the nicest amenities. I do have a suite style bathroom, which is fantastic, and my room isn't really that small. My roommate and I can comfortably seat about ten people in our room if we get creative. My roommate and I are best friends.
But honestly, the real reason that I love living in the dorms is the community that I'm surrounded in.
When I first moved in during Welcome Week, I was astonished by how warm and inviting all of the upper-classmen were. They helped me move all of my things into my room and they told me how excited they were to get to know me. That first week of school was so exciting because the community that was behind me was so excited and encouraging of everything that was going on.
My dorm throws multiple events every week, from events such as pajama parties to essay help (which is honestly something that every student should take advantage of, and I speak from experience). Someone's door is always open to talk, and my CL (or my RA to you non-Baylor folks) is my suitemate and one of my best friends.
The community here in the dorms is something that I know I could never have gotten in an apartment.
The people here have helped me get through some really tough times.
They've had my back when I'm at my worst and when I'm at my best.
They've supported me, and I've tried my best to support them back.
The community of my dorm is something that I think really made my college experience, and I'm really excited to spend the rest of my four years here.
