Life Lessons From Living With A 10-Month-Old

Sometimes we get caught up in our day to day lives and can’t take a minute to step back and realize how lucky we really are. Since my baby cousin has moved into my house, I have become so much more aware of all of the little things I have to be appreciative of. Whether he’s screaming his head off (which rarely happens) or laughing when I say stupid stuff like “I love your sneakers,” he makes my life brighter and has taught me some very important life lessons in such a short amount of time. Here are a few of the big ones:

There’s always something to smile about.

The Christmas tree is a big entertainment factor in our house but you can also smile about little things, like how you can see your reflection in the microwave (I still do not understand his fascination with the microwave, but whatever floats your boat bud). The lesson here is that there is always something to smile about whether it is big or small.

Every day brings something new and at the end of the day all you need is a bed and food.

No matter how bad your day might have been, a meal (or a bottle) and a good night’s sleep can make everything better. Tomorrow is a new day and one day you might be sitting on your ass and walking the next, so never despair because things change in an instant.

It’s okay to cry sometimes.

Sometimes you just need to cry even though nothing appears to be wrong and that is okay. Something so small may put you over the edge (like dropping your sippy cup) and the world seems like it is going to end, but we move on. In the meantime, you can have a good cry.

A hug can make anyone feel better.

When you are crying for no real reason, a hug can always make everything better. It not only warms you up outside, but also on the inside. “Love me!”

Love unconditionally because you never know what another person is going through.

When I walk in the door, I am greeted by the biggest smile you could ever imagine and a special someone wants me to play with him. My day might have been terrible, but all this tiny (or not so tiny) baby sees is his playmate who loves him more than anything finally coming home.

This baby shows me how to live life to the fullest and make the best of every situation; the lessons I have learned as a teenager living with a baby have been priceless. Thanks for putting a smile on my face every day and always being excited to see me. Xoxo buddy <3

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
