A Letter to My (Almost) Graduate

It's finally your time.

A Letter to My (Almost) Graduate

Yes, you read that right. It's finally your time. Your time to branch out on your own, make your own choices and decisions and live your own life. I couldn't be more proud of who you have become. You are so driven to chase after what you want and will not stop until you get it. You don't settle for anything less than perfection and that is one of the many qualities I admire about you. Don't let that motivation die just because you are finally reaching where you need to be, let it continue and bring you unwavering strength to continue getting exactly what you want. So for you and all of the other almost-grads, here is a short list of things to keep in mind on your new endeavor in college.

1. Don't be afraid of new things.

College will be full of things you are not used to. Take on new experiences but don't ever let someone change who you are. Anyone who tries to do that is not worth your time. You're going to make lots of friendships, some will fade away but the ones that last will be better than anything you've ever known.

2. Not everyone was raised the same as you.

You're moving away from home and into a new territory. You're going to have to get used to other people, a lot more than you think. Your personal space will often be violated and you're going to want to stop what you are doing and scream at least once if not a hundred times a day. But not everyone was raised the same way and that is something you will learn very quickly. People have different beliefs and see things differently and that is something you need to respect. Not agree with, not conform to, not drop what you're doing to accommodate, but respect. If you learn that, it will carry you a long way.

3. Tough times will come.

There will be moments where you are conflicted, where you won't know what to do. Instances where you will question every decision you've made leading to this point. College is going to be difficult, I will not lie to you, but you can't let it get the best of you. With the right mindset, you will kick college's ass these next four years.

4. Don't miss a thing.

I know this sounds impossible and at times it can be, but there are endless opportunities at college and you should take advantage of all of them if you get the chance to. Obviously, schoolwork is the number one priority when it comes to college, but always make time for fun and friends!

5. Lastly, take it all in.

Before you blink, your first year will be over and then before you turn around you will be almost done with college. I know I'm not there yet, but the real world can't be much better than this so don't take it for granted. Enjoy the best years of your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
