The thrill of dressing up as absolutely anything your heart desires is the component of Halloween that brings out the creative genius in us all. For myself and all other fellow college students, the reality of crafting the perfect spooky, ravishing, or comical costume on a budget can be quite the challenge. Over the course of my college career I’ve managed to conjure up a few witty costumes that had people asking, “I wish I thought of that!” or “OK, that’s WAY to scary.” Without further ado I present to you a glimpse into Steve’s Halloween pasts.
1. The Black Mastodon Ranger - Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers (2015)
I grew up watching power rangers every Saturday morning until… ok I still binge watch the oldies on Netflix every now and again but from the day I could pick out my own outfit at the Halloween store as kid the choice was always my number one gang of brightly colored crime fighters. Merely hours away from Halloween night last year and I still had not picked out a costume. While passing the window display of Hot Topic at the local mall I saw it, the beauty that was the black ranger shirt. I bought it instantly and knew it was the best purchase of the weekend. I’ve never heard so many drunk people say, “go, go, power rangers!” in my entire life.
2. Titsman (2012)
This infamous costume was drafted up during my senior year of high school, to no one’s surprise. A buddy and I saw these “TITS MAN” and “ASS MAN” t-shirts online and picked them up immediately. Instead of keeping it plain Jane and only wearing the shirts around all night we decided to make them into two, very underrated superheroes of the 21st century. Looking back on it the idea was a crude one at best but the amount of laughs I got from it made the night that much better. Tits-man is here to protect and serve! (with consent of course.)
3. Three Blind Mice (2014)
The couple’s costume is old news! It was time to bring in the triple threat, though I don’t know how scary three blind mice are... For what it’s worth, this last minute costume was pulled together perfectly and you know we slayed that shit. You can clearly tell I was going for the pimp daddy blind head mouse look, right? I got the golden crown to prove it. The best part about sharing a costume idea with your friends is seeing how much you had doing it as a team and for us it was drinking like a mice on cheese. (we couldn’t see how much we were drinking obvi.)
4. Quailman (2013)
Once a 90’s kid, always a 90’s kid. Most of you will remember the famous Nickelodeon television show “Doug.” The awkward boy who moves to a new town and spends his days fantasizing that he’s a superhero named Quailman. I decided to make Doug’s fantasy a reality and bring his childhood hero to life. All it took was an ugly old green sweater, a poorly drawn red Q done by yours truly, and wearing my own underwear outside of my pants complete with a belt tied around my head and you have the best costume this side of the Ben Franklin Bridge. Much like my power ranger costume this one brought back a ton of great memories and I was impressed by the final product that this may go down as my best last minute creation to date.
5. Ghost-face - Scream: The TV Series (2015)
Anyone who follows my writing on the Odyssey knows my sickening obsession with MTV’s Scream. The first season finished up towards the end of September, just in time for the 2015 Halloween season. A friend had told me they were selling the killer's mask from the show at a local Halloween store and I knew right away what I was being on the big night. I quickly put together a sleek, all black outfit complete with a fake knife and all. It was hilarious to see the startled reactions of people as I walked the streets. I even got a few scares in on my own friends who weren’t too fond of me after the fact but what’s the spirit of Halloween without a little mayhem. Keep an eye out for my new and improved Scream costume this year!
