While most of the season’s major blockbusters have already passed, summer isn’t over just yet. There are still quite a few movies worth seeing before classes begin and football season picks back up.
May and June presented us with box office hits like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Neighbors, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla, 22 Jump Street and Transformers: Age of Extinction. The month of July has plenty more in store for those still trying to rack up their free concessions points off movie tickets.
4th of July weekend brought us Melissa McCarthy’s newest comedy, Tammy. She plays a recently fired, recently divorced woman who goes on a cross country adventure with her not so sweet grandmother, played by Susan Sarandon. With a low Rotten Tomatoes rating of a 23, this film hasn’t done as well as McCarthy’s more recent ones. Still, should be worth a few laughs. Maybe.
On a more positive note, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes proved promising during its release on July 11 with an impressive rating of 91. This is the second film in the series of prequels to the decades old classics. Rising star Jason Clarke proves his ability in a leading role alongside Gary Oldman and Keri Russell. The only returning cast member from the previous film, Andy Serkis, displays more phenomenal performance capture work reprising his role as the lead ape Caesar. To my surprise, I actually shed a tear or two during the flashbacks scenes. A must see.
For those who enjoyed 2013’s The Purge, then you’re in luck. Barely one year later, they already have the sequel ready for release. The Purge: Anarchy hits theaters July 18. The difference? Instead of watching people being terrified and stuck inside their home, we get to see people being terrified and stranded outside. Even better.
That same weekend also brings us the highly anticipated comedy, Sex Tape. Before you jump to conclusions, no it's not a pornographic film. It's a movie about a pornographic film. Totally different. Cameron Diaz and her Bad Teacher costar, Jason Segel, team up again, this time portraying a couple who were just trying to spice things up in their marriage. Unfortunately, things get a little messed up when their home video accidently gets sent up into the cloud, which like Segel claims in the trailer, nobody understands.
Lastly, look forward to the newest sci-fi film, Lucy on July 25. Scarlett Johansson stars as your typical girl who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. After the bag of drugs implanted inside of her stomach starts to leak, she develops the ability to use more than just 10% of her brain. Yeah, hate when that happens. Definitely looks worth a watch. Besides, who doesn’t enjoy a movie that involves Morgan Freeman being a wise man and Scarlett Johansson being a badass?
I know I do.
