Life with uncertainty is stressful. Searching for a job is stressful! Who knows how long this season of your life will last? You can't just allow this stress to consume every part of your life. You have to find a healthy way to cope with all of it. I'm taking a lesson from the "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and choosing to laugh at the absurdity of life.
1. When you are first motivated to take on the job hunt, you feel like you can conquer anything.
Hold on to that confidence as long as you can. Everyone knows it won't last but you can do it.
2. When your family and friends ask what your plans are, you tell them the normal cliches.
At this point, denial is your best friend and that's okay. You'll need a little denial before reality hits you like a ton of bricks in the weeks or months to come.
3. But you really don't have plans past dinner.
Dinner first and then we'll talk about careers, resumes, and such. We'll get there when we get there!
4. Then, you realize that actually getting an interview is near impossible.
You've been on that job hunt for maybe a week or two and all you've got to show for it are a few rejection letters and lots of self-pity.
5.Yet, that moment you finally get an interview makes you feel like a million bucks.
Unfortunately, you spent that million bucks confidence on an outfit for an interview and you have nothing left to prepare you for the interview. Good luck!
6. When the interviewer asks you about yourself, but you're awkward.
You remember being told to practice your elevator speech while babbling on about your 3 dogs at home and your normal childhood. You can't turn back now so you throw in a mention of your great Aunt Sally to wrap it up.
7. Or when they ask you for references and you can't think of anyone at the top of your head.
Just like you can't cite yourself in your essays, you can't be your own references. Start making a list of them now.
8. When you go home and tell all of your friends all about how you screwed up the interview.
Thankfully, your friends have been there and done that so they understand and they know how to try and cheer you up.
9. And you're forced to face with rejection in a mature way.
Dancing, like humor, is a good coping mechanism...right?
10. But after many soul-crushing attempts, you finally land that job offer.
All of those heartbreaking phases leading up to this point seems worth it, but you're wondering where in the world did you go right. Hey! You're not complaining just confused.
11. You finally reach the point of self-confidence to advice others.
But just because you have self-confidence doesn't mean you'd be the best at it.
12. Because, congratulations, you survived it!
And if you've survived it once, you can survive it again.
