Ithaca's Odyssey: Meet our Writers
Ashley Lynne Nicole

Ashley Lynne Nicole: Why IC?

Shayna Gaskins: Ithaca is kind of my family's school. My dad went here and so did my brother. Plus, I play basketball.

ALN: Why did you want to write for the Odyssey?

SG: I like that we can write about whatever we want, and it encourages you to be creative.

ALN: What is your favorite article you've written?

SG: Probably my one about my teammates because they're like family.

(Check it out here!)

ALN: What is your major, and why did you choose it?

SG:

I came in exploratory because I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I went to the career and sports symposium. I really connected with what the alumni's jobs were and how they reflected on their time at Ithaca.

ALN: What is your favorite class you've taken at IC?

SG: It was very hands on, and it gives you a taste of what you'll be doing after graduation.

ALN: What is your dream job?

ALN: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

SG: I'm such a beach bum, and Australia has some of the best.

ALN: What's your favorite thing to do in Ithaca?

SG: Going to Purity! I go all the time; it's kind of a problem.

(She's even documented her Purity love)

ALN: What is your favorite place to eat at in Ithaca?

SG: It's a toss up between Ale House and Red's, but I'm going to say Ale House. You just can't go too often because they have a couple key things. I love their buffalo chicken spring rolls...So Good.

ALN: Coffee or Tea

ALN: Cats or Dogs?

ALN: Night owl or early bird?

SG: I cannot stay up late. I need my eight hours.

ALN: What's your favorite book?

SG: It was an amazing story over the span of 40 years about how a friendship develops. It will change your life. I'm currently making my mom read it.

ALN: What's your favorite movie?

SG: It speaks for itself. It's a classic.

ALN: Favorite TV show?

ALN: Who's your favorite actor?

SG: I don't really have a favorite. If you're good, you're good!

ALN: If you could have a drink with any famous person dead or alive, who would you pick?

SG: Kevin Durant. He is my favorite basketball player.

ALN: What Advice would you give your freshman self?

ALN: What is your cause?

SG: World Peace! Everyone just needs to get along. It takes so much effort to be mean and nasty, I feel like it's just easier to get along.

ALN: What is your life motto?

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
