Honestly? Who really knows.
I mean, if you think about it, social media is so new to us. Our ancestors lived without it, Grandma and Grandpa lived without it, so why do we need it?
Growing up in a generation where technology is constantly advancing, social media has been a hot topic. I don't think any of us could really go a day without checking our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. At the end of the day, we can all safely say that social media brings us joy. Social media enables us to connect with our friends across the country and/or world without any cost. It's so much easier than checking off a list of who you need to keep updated. Rather, just post a status about your recent college adventures and everyone gets a peek into your new life.
But social media isn't just about seeing what people had for breakfast or keeping up with your Great Aunt's knitting chronicles. It's not just about who gets more likes. There are so many reasons as to why Social media is important. For example, it benefits the business industry. Let's be real, if we see Kylie Jenner repping a new pair of chic sunglasses, aren't we more likely to want to buy the exact pair? Social media benefits companies by saving them money on advertisements. Why take the time to set up a photo shoot and have someone pose with the product when the company can easily take a screenshot of the model using the product that they previously posted on Instagram?
The economy can only flourish if people purchase goods. The internet and social media have promoted good for companies by placing ads on social media websites. These definitely don't go unnoticed. How many times a day can you scroll down your news feed and run into an ad that you have no interest in? But hey, you still notice it!
Not only does social media promote business for big companies, it helps out small business and individual entrepreneurs as well. A big following means big business. For individuals that sell goods, and individuals that just want to get their name out there.
So, aside from bettering the economy, social media is important if you want to get your skills noticed. For example, if you paint or sing, or really anything! Social media helps people get noticed. I mean, how else do you think Justin Bieber got famous? And so many others.
More often then not, you're spending your time on social media because you have nothing better to do. You're most likely scrolling down your feed while waiting in a doctors office, sitting on the toilet, or before you're getting ready to go to bed. I guess we never really noticed how social media is actually benefitting the life around us. There's more to media than just using it as a form of entertainment, how cool.
