For Existential Dreamers
Paula Daniëlse

This article is for the existential dreamers, for those who believe that humans have no set destiny but instead define their existence as an individual quest to change the world for the better. This world has many small pockets of paradise that have been ruined through our lack of responsibility, but we have also created beautiful masterpieces that will echo throughout history. The earth itself is an ideal place for us, and while it has its dangers we have thrived here. It is a place for human discovery, both joyous and painful. On the other hand, we are on the cusp of destroying our home.

Humanity is much like this world's unrequited infatuation burning brightly and yet painfully teaching an important lesson of how quickly one can be unwound or brought to a point of undying joy. We are at a global crossroads and we have a choice. We could continue on the path of unreciprocated love causing the world to go down in flames or we could return the feeling and live on in perfect harmony. Either way, it is up to us, it is humanity's choice; the responsibility and consequences are our own and we cannot blame fate for our mistakes. The decisions we make define us as people, so one should never say they were born to be something because you can be anything. An individuals, life is their own not one belonging to the stars.

I do not believe humans are inherently evil or good, we are what we choose to be, no more, no less. Life is not defined by some greater purpose, we are our present actions not the actions of the fates or outside forces. To live a life wrought with questions of the future is daunting and most of the time terrifying. We would like to believe that there is something out there waiting just for us, perhaps even proof that we can get a happy ending, no matter hardships we face. Well, I think that living with the unknown makes us more human. If we are unhappy, then we have the power to change our state. Humans have let nothing stop them before, so why should the idea of fate make us stumble over our convictions of sheer willpower? No matter how we each choose to live, we can continue to hope for a better future. Because it is not preordained gives us greater space and freedom to imagine and innovate toward our future. We have given rise to great empires, to space travel, and to knowledge. We have created some of the most hauntingly beautiful compositions, plays, novels, and paintings that continue to inspire today. I urge you all not to give up hope, for even if the world seems to be covered by a curtain of chaos because of our current misdemeanors remember all the beauty we have created. We have made this world our own and now instead of fostering ourselves we must find a way to support both ourselves and our home. As there is no course you must strictly follow I ask that each and every one of you live as you please, but remember to dream for that will be our salvation.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
