Living in the Midwest during the winter months means desperately wishing for winter to be over. Weeks will go by without seeing the sun or the grass. So, whenever a warm day comes around in our long and dreary winters, a typical Midwesterner will be seen outdoors. "Warm" days, though, usually qualify as days where the temperature is above freezing with zero snow in the forecast. And whenever it starts getting closer to spring, us Midwestern folk start to get spring fever that is typical of our area alone. Here's 10 of those typical ways.
1. As soon as the temperature rises above freezing, you roll your car windows down
.Anything over 32 degrees Fahrenheit is fair game to start rolling our car windows down. As long as it isn’t snowing into our car, it’s spring.
2. 45 degrees means wearing shorts and a t-shirt
.When venturing out into public, you’ll often spot people wearing shorts and shirts. However, people in the Midwest are always a little unsure because it can start snowing in five minutes…so it’s either shorts with a hoodie, or shirts and long pants. Gotta be on guard with our winter weather.
3. No matter the temperature or weather condition, you still see people on walks.
If you live in a subdivision, suddenly everyone is outside walking their dogs. Dogs, dogs everywhere. You also seem to see runners battling blizzard conditions…you rock those snowshoes and face mask.
4. Everyone gets a car wash.
As soon as the Midwest gets a warm day, everyone is either outside washing their car or at a car wash, even if there may be five inches of snow and salt the next day.
5. People are grilling outside in the middle of February
.Enough said.
6. Studying is suddenly the last thing on our to-do list.
Because we're ready for spring break, schoolwork seems to take longer and longer…
There’s a paper due tomorrow? Sorry, I’ll be a little late to class.
7. Everyone escapes to Florida for spring break
.It doesn’t matter who you are or who you know, you can bet money that someone you know is going to Florida.
8. We sit in the sun with sweatshirts and blankets
.Two “warm” days of weather with no snow (despite the picture) and sunshine means soaking in the rays in the backyard wearing sweatshirts and blankets in lawn chairs. Why? Because there’s been snow and no sun for two weeks. We’re desperate, okay.
9. We visit the beach knowing very well it’s just ice
.Even though we very well know that the beach will be purely ice and snow, if it’s 45 degrees, we’re visiting it (it's actually really cool to see everything frozen). What else is there to do? Roam cornfields?
10. We make the most of every day above freezing because we know damn well there will be snow tomorrow.
For those that live here in the Midwest, there’s definitely one thing we do very well. Adapt. One day we’re outside like it’s the middle of May, and the next we’re all geared up to brace blowing winds and blizzard conditions. We make the most of the weather in this area, and we surely don’t take warm days for granted.
