The most important Supreme Court Vacancy of our lifetimes

The most consequential Supreme Court nomination of our lifetime is happening right now.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the high court in what will be the most important political battle in the modern era.

Donald Trump has already gotten to appoint one justice, Neil Gorsuch, because Mitch McConnell stole a Supreme Court for Republicans during the 2016 election cycle. And now he'll have the opportunity to appoint a second.

Anthony Kennedy is normally a conservative voter, but he has provided somewhat of a moderate voice on the Court, voting in favor of landmark cases such as striking down the ban on same-sex marriage in 2015. With the loss of Kennedy, the Supreme Court loses a moderate voice in favor of a judge who will likely align with every vote how Trump wants him to.

This nomination and vacancy will be extremely consequential, and it could lead to the reversal of abortion rights, gay rights and many more. There are fewer than four months until the next election and six months until the next Congress is seated in 2019.

So, will Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell follow the precedent he set in 2016 when he blocked President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland and wait until after the 2018 elections to vote on a new Supreme Court nominee? Absolutely not. McConnell has already said that he plans to hold a vote for the nominee in the fall. Mitch McConnell and the Republican Party don't care about their own precedent they sent back in 2016. All they care about is being opportunists. This is the golden opportunity to set our country back over a century in terms of civil and human rights, and McConnell and gang will use every play in the book to take advantage of this.

The Supreme Court has already taken flack recently for its decision on Trump's travel ban. It's not the first time that the Supreme Court has made controversial decisions on human rights (see: Korematsu v. United States, which verified the legality of FDR putting Japanese-Americans in internment camps). Adding a hard-line conservative will only add to the reversal of human rights.

This should be the time for the Democrats to play hardball and give Republicans a taste of their own medicine. Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeted: "Millions of ppl are just months away from determining the senators who should vote to confirm or reject POTUS's nominee, & their voices deserve to be heard now, as @SenateMajLdr thought they deserved to be heard then. Anything but that would be the absolute height of hypocrisy."

If he can get all of the Democrats in the Senate to vote against the nominee, then the Democrats only need to get two Republicans to block the nominee no matter how qualified he or she is. After all, this is an election year, so shouldn't we wait on the nominee?

With the path Trump has America on, we could see Trump nominate Ted Nugent. If another justice retires, maybe we'll get to see Kid Rock. Or he'll just nominate the entire panel of Fox and Friends to the high court.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
