5 Items To Pack In A First-rate Care Package For Protestors

If you are looking to pack a backpack full of essentials or help-out and make care-packages in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, below are important items to have on hand during marches.

Black Lives Matter March in Chicago

In recent weeks, thousands across the nation have been protesting the police brutality Black Americans face in their everyday lives. These protestors will march hours on end in the June summer heat and humidity while also remaining COVID-19 conscious with face coverage. More than ever, it is important to stay hydrated and healthy during these demonstrations to focus all one's energy on advocating for the equal treatment of Black Americans.

1. Water and food

The first essential item that should be packed is a squeeze water bottle. The specific top allows for water to be easily squeezed in eyes and mouth if needed. Frequently drinking water throughout the day will prevent you from feeling faint or weak in the hot sun. Preferably a reusable water-bottle which avoids unnecessary use of plastic and will keep your liquid cool. It is also important to pack a healthy snack that will fuel your body for the day. I suggest a protein or granola bar and a piece of fruit.

2. Masks

Second, some sort of face coverage such as a mask or bandana will help protect protestors from the spread of COVID-19. A bandana will be especially beneficial in covering the nose, face and eyes from tear gas bombs if necessary.

3. First-Aid supplies

Police oftentimes respond to protests that are peaceful with violence. So to take extra precaution packing bandaids, disinfectants and gauze for any type of medical emergency is always good to have on hand. Duct tape to seal a wound or tape up a sprain is beneficial as well, along with goggles to protect the eyes from tear gas.

4. Sun protection

It is suggested to pack a hat to protect your skin from the sun since mineral based products such as sunscreen can trap chemicals from pepper spray and tear gas onto your skin. Sunglasses, air fans and UV protective clothing can also be a helpful way to beat over sun exposure.

5. Keeping important information on hand

Lastly, make sure you have your insurance card, ID and emergency contact information. When packing care packages for protestors, it is always helpful to pack an extra piece of paper and pen for marchers to write personal or legal information down. A portable charger in case your phone is on low battery and you need to contact someone in case of emergency is another important item to pack.

These are some of the many fundamental items to have on hand at all times during protests. If you are immune-compromised or live with an elderly family member and find it hard to attend protests without putting yourself or family at risk for COVID-19 exposure, making care packages is one unique way to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

Anyone who was born and raised in New Jersey (or anywhere really) knows of Bruce Springsteen, whether or not they like him is a whole other situation. I hope that his hundreds of classic rock songs and famous high energy performances, even in his sixties he can put on better concerts than people half his age, are at least recognizable to people of all ages. Love him or hate him (I identify with the former) you have to admit that some of his songs and interviews have inspirational quotes and lyrics.
