Overthinking is a big problem for me. If my friend doesn't reply to my risky text in less than five minutes, I think they'll hate me. Most of my thoughts are just random, almost impossible scenarios that I end up believing are true. I hate getting upset because I think that these situations will actually happen, and I stay up all night just wondering what I should do. Especially at night, when I have time to think through my day, I create these weird thoughts that keep me awake. In fact, I just complained to a friend about the actions of another that led me to an assumption that was unreasonable. Creating a list of fake problems is not really what I intend to do, especially in this stage of life.
1. Rant
...maybe to your best friend, or on a Google Doc, but it would probably seem stupid after you read what you wrote. Use vulgar language and all caps, anything that would express how you feel. Even if it might not seem so unreasonable, maybe a friend can actually think with an open mind and tell you so. Don't worry, things are probably going to end up well in the end, and most things wont even matter in the future, like that boy/girl who just broke your heart. I've done this and it felt great, especially when I list my wicked thoughts. After a few months when I'm over what happened, I come back to the conversation or document and laugh at it because of how utterly embarrassing my argument was.
2. Think Happy Thoughts
If you think the world is an evil place right now, then I'll give you something to think about: fluffy white cats, unicorns, chips, small puppies and rain (bows). Think about the last time you were happy and why. Think about what the last movie you watched was about. Think about what you ate for dinner two days ago. Memorize the periodic table. Recite the digits of pi. Draw a picture. Watch your favorite show with someone you value, and if that person is who you're disappointed at, then find another friend. If you don't have another friend, then make one. If you're a loner, like me, then...
3. Cry
Actually, this solves many things. You'll feel better if you cry, I promise. Scientifically, crying releases endorphins, which is like the body's natural painkiller, but I don't want to talk about feelings scientifically because... feelings. Crying relieves stress, and improves your mood. Scroll through quotes and relate to them. Watch sad Youtube videos and feel bad for others. Read blog posts that reflect your situation. After a good, long cry, then maybe you can put some time aside to think.
4. Think Things Through
Don't think negative thought; just state the facts. Find reasonable reasons for any major action. if you think it's sketchy, ask a friend, or collect yourself and confront the person that's causing the trouble. Nothign is more important than your happiness.
Warning: Don't think too long; you might get depressed all over again.
