Welcome To Hell

Hell: a place regarded in various religions as a spiritual realm of evil and suffering, often traditionally depicted as a place of perpetual fire beneath the earth where the wicked are punished after death.

Another definition of hell for college students is finals week, otherwise known as three weeks of pure torture. Everyone knows that the weeks before are dedicated to studying, writing papers, and preparing to leave school. The stress that builds up is unbelievable and unavoidable. The amount of work just seems to pile up.

The five five-page papers, four tests, and all the homework just make it seem like there is nothing but work to do. Due dates are coming up fast and remembering what is due when and what class it is for may seem like it is impossible. Remember nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.

There are ways to make your way through finals week, aka Hell week.

1. Study

It's an easy one, but studying will help. Even studying for 30 minutes every day prior to the exam will make a difference. Pulling all-nighters will do nothing for you, even if you think it is a good idea at the moment.

2. Be well-rested

Being well-rested will also help you keep your focus when taking the test. You will be more likely to remember what you studied the past nights if you get a good night sleep rather than when you pull all-nighters.

3. Take breaks

Studying too much will have you stressed more than you should be. Taking breaks for at least 10 minutes is a good way to take care of your mental health and giving time for the information to sink in. You can do anything you want for 10 minutes, like watch Netflix, play Sims, have a dance party, or even nap.

4. Keep in mind summer is almost here

Knowing that summer is just ahead will keep you motivated to finish this year strong. Even though it is so close you cannot give up just yet. After you finish your finals, you will be able to go to the beach, hang out with friends, and just be with your pets.

Hell week is almost over. You can do it!

Ten Truths Every Honors Student Knows
Photo by Poodar Chu on Unsplash

One of the main reasons I came to Salem State was I was offered a spot in the honors program. While it offered many benefits, scholarships and priority registration to name a few, what drew me in was the strong sense of community and close knit friendships many found. I am glad to say that that I did find these things, and so much more. I found a home made up of some of the most brilliant and most unique people I have ever met. Being in an honors program creates a college experience unlike any other and creates some universal truths that really only an honors student can fully understand.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?
