There is nothing in the world that i hate more than writer's block. The act of having your creative side being drained especially when you need it the most. As an English major writer's block is the single most prominent struggle I deal with academically. And because of that I have compiled some ways to get your mojo back when they're on pause.
Go for a walk.
As cliche as it is, it really helps. Especially if you've been sitting for a while. it's crucial to get the blood pumping and flowing to your brain. Stretch, do some jumping jacks, or some push ups. Take some friends with you and go on an adventure, hike up a mountain, or discover mac and cheese bites from Sheetz. Many times we get frustrated with our bodies, not realizing that our bodies get frustrated with us too.
Bop to some tunes.
Take a second to listen to some music. Two or three songs and some sing along really can help. Especially because music helps relax you, and loosen you up.
Doodle.
Get out those highlighters, and a scrap piece of paper and just doodle your little heart away. If you just focus on that it usually helps relax your mind from the pressure of having to come up with an idea. Thus making it easier to return to work with a clear slate.
Give some color to that coloring book.
Whether it's an adult coloring book or not isn't really of importance. Personally, I prefer the kiddie coloring book;, the adult ones put too much pressure on me and give me a headache. But when I can't focus i just whip out the Minnie Mouse coloring book and my crayons, and color Minnie's world.
Read, baby, read.
Take a reading break, just stop what you're doing and read a chapter or two, three if you want to be safe. Give your mind the chance to relax, and just breathe; sometimes it needs a break from all the things it does for you. If you're in need of a new book, I recommend the Lunar Chronicles by Marisa Meyer if your into futuristic cyborg, sci-fi fairy tales with a twist.
There you have it 5 ways to combat writers block which is what I use every time I'm struggling. Hope this helps! And it's something to remember as the semester rolls around and we have to start back up with school.
