12 Pieces Of Advice From A Nostalgic Freshman In College

Well, it's finally that time of the year where 'wise, knowledgeable' college freshmen like myself give advice on those glorious high school days. Because, yes, believe it or not, I miss high school.

1. You're not in college, so stop obsessing over it.

This was some of the best advice a girl a year older gave to me. It sounds obvious, but it is so important. Rather than calculating the distance in miles from you and your best friend, take advantage of your friends living 15 minutes away from you.

2. Eat lunch with your friends.

First semester senior year is by far the most stressful semester, with AP classes, college apps, leadership positions, and more. There is nothing I regret more than spending more lunches in meetings than with my friends.

3. Get to know your teachers better.

Believe it or not, your teacher might actually have a pretty amazing life with some fascinating stories. They can teach you a lot more than just history, and if you're lucky, you can still stay in touch with them.

4. Make a bucket list and a calendar.

Sneak out at 3am, TP someone's house, go camping, host a Friendsgiving, anything. Make a list and put items on a group calendar before you forget and actually follow through on them.

5. Do or join something totally out of your comfort zone.

Join an intramural sports team (I hate basketball, but I have never had so much fun), work backstage for a play, write for your school paper, and more. By doing something you aren't comfortable with, you can meet new people, have fun, and try something new to make you a stronger person.

7. Spend more time with your family.

My mom and I grew closer over long distance, so now I miss her and the rest of my family more than anything else. I would give anything to actually be in my house on a Sunday night rather than FacetTiming in.

8. Get in the habit of writing letters.

In high school, I loved writing letters to my friends, and I am trying to be better about it in college. I even made my friends a fake acceptance letter for my own college to brighten up their lives with college decisions.

9. Talk to everyone.

Who's that girl next to you in AP Euro? Or the new girl? Get to know them better.

10. Go all out for spirit week and school dances.

I always hated pre-homecoming spirit week, prom, formal, everything. Now, looking at pictures of younger girls at my high school, I would do anything to dress up as my favorite Disney character just one more time.

11. Take plenty of pictures.

Before you know it, you'll be a month into college and want to post a nostalgic 'TBT' pic of your friend group, so take as many as you can.

12. Never, ever, EVER say or think starting with this phrase: 'In __ months, we'll all be separated.'

Live each day one day at a time. Try not to stress about your future, because as everyone older says, it will work out. Think about college when the time comes; and believe me, it will come sooner than you think. Regardless of how far away you and your friends will be, it is extremely possible to keep in touch, visit, and still be best friends.

So, seniors, have fun, make memories, study hard, and never take advantage of seeing the people you love the most every single day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
