The Happiness List

Mondays suck. Plain and simple. One second you’re living up your weekend with friends and family, having a grand ole time and then suddenly BAM Monday morning hits you in the face like a ton of bricks. We grumble and groan about how tired we are, or how much work we have left to do, or how much we’d rather be doing anything else, because there is nothing good about Mondays.

Or is there?

The world is a beautiful, bright place. There’s good in it, lots of it actually. It’s the little things that make life wonderful, like a warm cup of tea or a lazy summer night. The things we take for granted are the ones that make Mondays wonderful.

  1. The crunch of fresh snow
  2. Putting on warm clothes, fresh out of the dryer
  3. Singing. Singing loudly
  4. Waking up early and realizing you still have hours to sleep
  5. Cheesy pick-up lines
  6. When you make a reference to a movie and someone gets it
  7. Finding money in the pockets of old jeans
  8. A good cup of coffee
  9. Puppies
  10. Popping bubble wrap
  11. This thought: there’s something that you can do better than anyone else in the world
  12. Nutella
  13. Riding a swing again
  14. Winning a scratch off lottery ticket
  15. This thought: somewhere in the world, a new mom is gazing at her newborn baby
  16. Mini marshmallows
  17. Baby elephants
  18. Fitting everything perfectly
  19. A mother’s hug
  20. When your dog cuddles you when you’re upset
  21. An unexpected compliment
  22. The smell of books
  23. Getting into a bed with fresh sheets
  24. Catching fireflies
  25. Taking your bra off after a long day
  26. Airport reunions: bear hugs, long-awaited kisses, happy tears
  27. Peeling glue off of your hands
  28. Long weekends (Thank you MLK)
  29. Taking your shoes off after a long day
  30. Fuzzy blankets
  31. The trailers before the actual movie
  32. Feeling good after you’ve eaten healthy all day
  33. The dessert you eat to reward yourself for a day of clean eating
  34. Waking up Christmas morning
  35. Hearing your favorite song on the radio
  36. Glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts
  37. Fuzzy socks
  38. Chocolate chip cookies, fresh out of the oven
  39. The first snow fall of winter
  40. Finishing a tube of Chapstick
  41. Cuddling
  42. Driving with the windows down in summer
  43. Fireworks
  44. That first morning stretch
  45. Jumping in puddles on rainy days
  46. A full tank of gas
  47. Going out of your way to crunch autumn leaves
  48. A sunny day at the beach
  49. A cold shower on the sunburn you received from the day at the beach
  50. Changing out of jeans and into sweats
  51. Spontaneous day trips
  52. TOUCHDOWN!!
  53. The way your dog greets you when you get home
  54. Seeing a shooting star
  55. Acing an important test
  56. Hearing “I’m proud of you”
  57. Dancing in the ktichen
  58. Pumping gas and ending on an even amount
  59. Licking the spoon after you bake
  60. Fresh flowers on the kitchen table
  61. Sunshine
  62. Olive Garden breadsticks
  63. A good jog
  64. Getting a well-deserved promotion
  65. Opening the oven before the time goes off
  66. Hearing “I love you”
  67. This thought: Even if you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward

So in the end, if we opened our eyes to the small things, I think we’d realize that Mondays aren’t so bad after all.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
