Growing Up Outnumbered

What being the only girl has taught me.

As the only girl of four children, I've always been outnumbered when it comes to the household boy to girl ratio, which means my opinion, often times, doesn't matter. Growing up, I've learned a lot about living with a household full of boys.

You will always have body guards. Brothers will be the first people to have your back when something goes wrong. If a guy just broke your heart, they're ready to fight. If your best friend is spreading rumors, they'll put those to a stop. They will always protect you.

They will always have a number one fan. Whether its a community league team or starting on the varsity team, you will be their biggest and loudest fan. Nothing makes you prouder than being able to say "hey that's my brother."

You will always have a best friend. Sure, brothers can be a pain, but they'll be the first to listen and support you. If it's been a bad night at work or you just need someone to vent to, they'll always be there to pick you back up.

Guys will never pick up after themselves. Even after the 5th time asking them to pick up their socks or take out the trash, they'll need a little reminder until it gets done. Most of the time, you’ll end up doing it anyways.

Dinner table discussion can be anything. With a family of guys, nothing is off limits as topic of discussion, even at the kitchen table. Bodily functions are even allowed in the mindset of teenage guys. And you're lucky if you get a please after 'pass me the potatoes.'

Brothers will always be up for adventure. They will always say yes to spontaneous road trips and late night Cook Out runs. Brothers keep life interesting. Cherish the time you get to be adventurous together.

Football season is a sacred time. Fall nights are spent determining who can cheer the loudest for their favorite team, and half of the laundry is football paraphernalia. Have the chips and dip ready at kickoff.

You can't be afraid to get dirty. In a house of boys, mud and dirt are an everyday mess. Whether it's backyard football games or learning to change the oil in your car, you're going to get a little dirty hanging with the guys.

First dates might as well be a game of 20 questions. When the guy you're dating comes to pick you up for the first time, he will be bombarded with a series of questions. Be patient with the men in your family- they just want the best guy for you.

Your family sees the bad in people before you do. If your brothers say something is wrong, there usually is. When it comes to dating, or any friendship in general, your brothers are usually a good judge of character; if they don't get along, there's a problem.

You will be just as protective over them as they are over you. Any girls that try to come into your brothers' lives will have to go through you first; they will definitely need your seal of approval before they can date your brother.

The bonds you share with the men of your family will always be unique. Growing up outnumbered will have its pros and cons. For example, if the movie selections are voted on by the family, be prepared to watch another gory horror movie or The Patriot for the 267th time. But also remember that you'll always have unconditional love and support from the best friends you could ask for.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
