Alright, you're in college now and you don't have a meal plan, or maybe you have a meal plan but you need to learn how to feed yourself. You have the option of choosing fast food that isn't good for you, or to buy groceries that will actually sustain your health. Here are a few quick tips that I've used over the past two years that have saved me a ton and my belly full.
1. STOP EATING OUT!
Okay, that's not realistic. Let's edit that tip- limit your eating out to less than 4 times a month. That gives you one meal a week to treat yourself. This isn't extreme whereas you feel the need to deny yourself what you truly desire, but you also aren't feeding into every temptation that comes your way.
2. Go SMART grocery shopping.
Buy foods that you will actually eat. If you are trying a new dietary regime, ease into it. Don't go and buy $100 worth of groceries, try one day of the new diet, hate it, then have all this extra food left over.
3. Seasonal veggies are your friend!
"Eat your veggies!" says every mother ever, of course followed by an eyeroll. Well, after being faced with my family's medical history, I realized that my mother's advice was a necessity. However, when I first started buying my own groceries I only bought veggies I was comfortable with, without realizing that every veggie isn't always in season. Not only is it better for the environment, it will be cheaper on your wallet. Here's a list of veggies based on their season.
4. Meatless Monday or Meatless Month
Going meatless for personal moral values is a great reason. It is also great for your wallet. Veggies are definitely cheaper.
5.Get CASH back on groceries!
I use an app called Checkout 51. Every week when I go grocery shopping (or every two weeks when I am busy), I look on the app to check for their list of weekly deals. The app shows the product, the amount of cash back you will receive, and sometimes the location that the item is sold at (depending if the product is store specific). At the end of your shopping trip, simply take a picture of the receipt and upload it for review. The amount you receive will be credited to your account on the app. Once your account balance reaches $25 or more, you can deposit to your PayPal.
