Words are powerful. In the book of James, the author compares the tongue to a bit in a horse's mouth and the rudder of a ship. Both are smaller things that control a much larger object. “Likewise,” James says, “the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts” (James 3:5 NIV). Like how a spark can start a forest fire, so can one work have a huge impact on those around you.
Our words can bless or curse, build up or tear down, hurt or encourage. In Ephesians 4:29 Paul exhorts us to keep unwholesome talk come from our mouths. Instead, our words should build others up. There is so much power in our words, that is why were are called to watch what we say.
Because of our sinful nature, taming our words is nearly impossible. As a nanny, I constantly had to remind my kids to use kind words. Instead of yelling at each other or calling each other names, I encouraged them to use gentle words to communicate their needs or frustrations.
Since we seem innately opposed to using our words for good, I have begun praying about my words regularly.
Oh Lord, give me words.
As I sit here staring at a blank white page, give me the words to say. Not empty words, not pointless words, but words full of life and lesson. When someone comes to me for advice or counsel, give me words. When I don’t know what to say, give me words.
Give me words that will benefit others. Let no unwholesome talk come out of my mouth. Instead, let the words I say build others up. Give me words to spread your love and your truth. When I’m nervous, stressed, and teary, help me know what to say. Lord, give me words to bring light to this darkening generation. Let my words bring hope and joy.
Show me your words when I am in need of encouragement. When all seems lost and I’m exhausted, give me your words to renew my soul. When others need encouragement, show me what to say.
And when all words fail, show me how to love like you do. At those times when no words can heal or help, when all that can be said has been said, when tears or anger flows, show me how to care for others.
Let your love and your Gospel be shown in every word I say.
