Hey y'all! Learn a little more about me!

Get to Know Us: Madison Bridges

I have just realized that I have yet to properly introduce myself to all the new internet friends I'm going to be making while I'm writing for The Odyssey.

So hi, I'm Madison Bridges! I'm a Senior working on year 4 of a 5-year plan. I am a founding sister of the Gamma Omicron chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon here at Georgia Southern. I'm a Justice Studies major, Psychology minor and I feel more at home in the Carroll Building than in my apartment. Now that y'all are up to date on my typical college background info, here are a few things about me that I probably wouldn't have time to bring up on the first day of Formal Recruitment...

  • I have 3 beautiful, wonderful, crazy, amazing, perfect Littles that I wouldn't give up for anything in this whole wide world.
  • I also have 3 Grandlittles, 2 Great-Grandlittles, and 2 Great-Great-Grandlittles. They all make my heart happy and smiley, and brighten my world.

  • If you couldn't tell I am OBSESSED with my Fam, my Lilly Pulizter-Pirate Family is more than I could have ever dreamed of in a family branch.
  • One of the main reasons I wanted to be in a sorority was to have a Big, because I have two younger sisters and I'm the oldest, but that wasn't meant to be. Oh the irony!
  • Being a chapter founder is probably one of the most precious and dear experiences of my life thus far.

  • I'm allergic to gluten.
  • I'm addicted to Pinterest, crafting, and cooking.
  • I live in the colors coral and mint.
  • I am a closet nerd. Live long and prosper, y'all!
  • I am a regular volunteer of the Statesboro Police Department.
  • Finding ways to reduce crime rates is my passion.
  • In case it wasn't obvious, I grew up on a farm.
  • I showed pigs for 14 years, and I miss it every day. It's a real thing, I promise.

  • There were 22 people in my high school graduating class.
  • I had never lived within 45 minutes of a Walmart, mall, movie theater, or Chick-fil-A until I moved to Statesboro.
  • I learned to drive on a F-250 without dependable power steering.
  • I'll monogram anything and everything.
  • I love, love, LOVE Lilly Pulitzer. She is my spirit animal.

  • I met the love of my life at Gnat's, at the first Luck of the Deephers, on a dare from Megan Fannon for him to ask me if I liked cow tipping. (See last week's article for the answer.)
  • My life is basically an episode of "Sh%t Southern Women Say."
  • I believe in unicorns.

Well y'all, that pretty much sums me up. At least until I think of 27 other things I should have said within five minutes of this being published, but that is a different story entirely. So, until next time ladies and gents, have fun and make good choices.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

For many undergraduates across the nation, the home stretch has begun. Only one more semester remains in our undergraduate career. Oh, the places we will go! For the majority of college seniors, this is simultaneously the best and worst year out of the past four and here’s why.

1. The classes you are taking are actually difficult.

A schedule full of easy pottery throwing and film courses is merely a myth on the average campus. With all of those prerequisites for the upper-level courses and the never-ending battle you fight each year during registration for limited class seats, senior year brings with it the ability to register for the final courses you need to fulfill your major. Yet, these are not the easy entry level courses. These are the comprehensive, end of major, capstone courses designed to apply the knowledge from all your previous courses, usually in the form of an extensive research paper or engaged learning project. The upside is you actually probably really enjoy these classes but alas there is no room for slackers here.

1. You're tired of school food and have resorted to surviving off junk food and cereal.

2. Your financial aid/money is running out...and chances are it all went to textbooks and takeout.
