Dear Future Generations,
I hope this letter finds its way onto your screen so you can realize that Generation Y is not that bad. Your history books will probably paint us in a negative light, but maybe you should hear it from one of us.
Yes, the election of 2016 is crazy, and there is a great possibility that either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton is going to win. That is not our faults. We tried to get the right candidate in, but due to voter fraud, we have been unsuccessful thus far.
Yes, there are mass shootings in the USA on a regular basis. Even worse, the media portrays them as acts of religious extremism and terrorism, not for what they truly are.
Yes, we didn't help the economy by going to college and taking out tens of thousands of dollars each in student loans. This is what we were told to do our entire lives, and then we entered a failing job market after graduating.
Yes, our environment is being destroyed. That is the fault of the generations before us. We, on the other hand, have tried our best to reverse the damages of our forefathers.
These things should not define us. They are all true, but they are not our fault. We have been social advocates, trying to right the wrongs of the past.
We were the generation that pushed for LGBT rights and marriage equality. In 2015, the Supreme Court said same-sex marriage would be legal. We realized gender isn't just male and female. We rallied against bigotry from Westboro Baptist Church. We rallied behind the victims in Orlando. We realized love is love.
We were the generation who fought Wall Street. We Occupied Wall Street, as well as cities all over the world. We knew that the 1 percent had too much money and power over the other 99 percent.
We were the generation that marched on Manhattan in the Peoples Climate March. We advocated for global action against climate change. We were the generation that came up with solutions for the BP oil spill.
We were the generation that protested police brutality. We knew that the actions against minorities were wrong, so we took to the streets with signs that say "Black Lives Matter" and "Stop Police Brutality." We knew that the media's portrayal of minorities was not the truth.
We were the generation that wanted better for the future generations. Every generation before us said the same thing. Our parents and grandparents always said they wanted for things to be better for our generation, yet they're the ones who caused wars, destroyed the economy and killed the environment.
To future generations, I hope you find this and realize, we really do want things to be better for you. We really are trying.
Sincerely,
Generation Y
