For My Little Sister As I Go Back To College

What I wish I had told you sooner.

For My Little Sister As I Go Back To College
Challenge to Change

For the majority of the past 16 years you’ve been the one that threw the tantrums, that didn’t have to share because you were “just too cute,” and the one that got away with the attitude because you were still “finding your personality.” You were a huge pain in my butt… but you also taught me so much.

You taught me how to love and protect more than anything ever has. You taught me how to be patient and how to share, especially when I didn’t want to. As you’ve grown you’ve made me laugh when I’m stressed, made me snort all kinds of liquid out of my nose because of a dumb joke you’ve told, and become my best friend, my confidant, and my person.

Thank you for supporting me even when it meant moving away, for allowing our weekly FaceTime dates to fill me with so much joy, and for letting me have breakdowns about not being capable of “adulting” one second longer. Thank you for understanding when I’m not able to be home all the time and for forgiving me when I fall short of being the example that you need.

Thank you for letting me walk beside you as you grow into the beautiful and strong woman you are becoming. Thank you for calling me when you cry, when life is going great, and when you need help. I'm sorry I don't have all of the answers, but it makes my heart so full when you seek my help anyway. I miss your constant smart remarks and inability to get through a joke without busting out laughing before you finish. I’m so lucky to have a one of a kind dime like you.

I’m proud of you for standing up for yourself and chasing after your dreams. I’m proud of who you are and the person you become with each passing day. Never question your worth as you go through this new phase of your life. You are a beautiful child of the King and even though I can’t walk beside you everyday, He always will.

I want you to know that no matter how far apart we are in distance, you’ve left a footprint on my heart that no time or space could ever erase.

I love you long time kid. I’m so thankful for you. Keep being your outspoken, spunky, lively self. It will take you places.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
