In the coming years, many television shows and movies are getting reboots for a whole new generation to admire, and binge on Netflix, of course. Some are making a comeback from the recent past, such as Spider-Man, last seen in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in 2014, and some reaching as far back as 1975, to when "Rocky Horror Picture Show"first debuted.
To some, it may seem like Hollywood is so steadily running out of ideas that they are forced to remake classics or reboot series that have been long dead, or maybe be even should have died. But to me, this is an exciting opportunity for a whole new generation to experience the classics. So without further ado, here is a small preview of the top five reboots and remakes coming your way in the next few years:
1. Star Wars
On Dec. 18, 2015, "Star Wars" is returning to the screen for the first time since 2005, when "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" was released. While there is extreme excitement among fans of the film series about "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," there is still great hesitation as to how good the movie is going to be. After all, we have been burned before. I’m looking as you, "Phantom Menace." There are so many rumors and fan theories about the movie floating around that it is hard to tell what is true any more, though I think, and pray, that Darth Jar Jar is just an awful myth. Well, I suppose we’ll have to wait 'til the 18 and see.
2. Spider-Man
Last seen in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in 2014, Peter Parker is set to make his return the the silver screen in May of 2016 in "Captain America: Civil War." Unfortunately, since Marvel studios now has the rights to Spider-Man instead of Sony Pictures, the role of Peter Parker will no longer be played by the lovable Andrew Garfield. Manhattan's guardian also has a solo film scheduled to be released in 2017.
3. Rocky Horror Picture Show
Next fall, "Fox" will run a two-hour special of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the movie’s premiere. The remake will be produced, directed, and choreographed by Kenny Ortega, the director of "Hocus Pocus." Not much has been announced about the cast other than that "Orange is the New Black" actress Laverne Cox will be playing Doctor Frank-n-Furter, “the sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania.” This role was acted by Tim Curry in the original movie. Lou Adler, the original producer of the movie, will be the executive producer. In fall of 2016, be ready to give yourself over to absolute pleasure.
4. Gilmore Girls
Everyone’s favorite mother-daughter duo is returning to the small screen for a limited series revival on Netflix. While negotiations with the cast are just beginning, it has been confirmed that this limited event will be written and directed by the original creator of the series Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino. The series will consist of four ninety-minute episodes, or mini-movies. As many of you probably know, the internet exploded when the revival was announced, and I wouldn’t expect any other reaction.
5. The X-Files
Mulder and Scully return for a limited revival of the 90’s supernatural thriller. Nearly fourteen years after "The X Files" went off the air, fans are as excited as ever for the return of one of history's greatest investigative teams. On January 24, 2016, this science fiction horror drama will return to the small screen for a limited engagement on "Fox." A preview of the first episode was screened at New York Comic Con in October of 2015. Both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will return as their original characters, searching for the elusive truth.
Some other reboots coming your way in the next few years are "Ghostbusters" (2016), "Ocean's Eleven" (actually a reboot of a reboot), "Twin Peaks," "Friday the 13th," "The Birds," "Power Rangers," and many more that have yet to be announced.
