Finding Your Person

How to know if you've found your person.

Finding Your Person

We have all heard of that silly saying "finding your person." It's kind of confusing. It kind of doesn't mean anything. But when you think about it, it actually means quite a lot.

We all search for the one person. The one person who gets us. The one person who just understands everything about us. The one person we clique with. The one person.

This one person could be a best friend or a significant other. They could be someone you've known for years or someone you've barely met. The best part is knowing that you've found this "person."

Over this past year, I've seen so many people claim to have found their person. But how do they know they've really found them? What sets this person apart from the rest? How do you know this is your "person?"

1. They believe in you.

We all want to be believed in. It is in our nature to desire love and encouragement from those around us. We strive for comfort and for someone to care for us. When you find your person, they will never stop believing in you. Even when you feel like no one thinks you can do it or you don't even believe in yourself, they are right there cheering you on. This person never puts you down because they know you need someone there to push you forward and to encourage you to keep going. That's what makes this person your person.

2. They love you despite the stupid decisions you make.

We can admit it, we all make stupid decisions. Whether its eating that entire pizza by yourself or sending that text message that you know you shouldn't send, we all mess up sometimes. Even though some of these stupid decisions can cause quite a mess, the great thing about finding your person is knowing that they will still love you either way. They won't judge you for eating that entire pizza. They might tell you that it was a bad idea to send that text message and maybe even ignore you for about 3 minutes, but they will turn right around and help you make it right. This person doesn't let little decisions and situations get in the way of things because they love you. They aren't perfect either and they know that. That's what makes this person your person.

3. They understand you even when you think no one does.

Some days it just feels like no one around us gets it. People don't understand how we feel and they don't understand what we need. But it's different when you find your person. They know exactly what to say and how to make you feel better. They know exactly what is wrong and how to fix it immediately. This person gets you. They understand how you are in every situation, emotion, and state of mind. They know what you're saying even if you don't think you're making any sense. They understand your feelings and emotions even if they change 100 times in an hour. That's what makes this person your person.

4. They know you better than you know yourself.

We all have times when we feel like we don't even know who we are. We don't know how we got to the place we are in life or how things changed so quickly. But when you find your person, you find someone who somehow knows you better than you know yourself. They know what you're thinking before you even say it. They know what that little voice in the back of your mind is saying and how to make it disappear. They know how you really feel about a situation no matter how much you may be faking it. When you find your person, you find someone who can read your mind and someone who can tell you why you're in a weird mood before you even know you're in a weird mood. Even when you may feel lost and confused, your person is there to redirect back to you who truly are. That's what makes this person your person.

5. They never give up on you.

We've all been given up on at some point in our lives. We all know how it feels and we hate it. What's even worse is that sometimes we give up on ourselves. We feel like there's no point in moving forward and we'd honestly just rather stay in bed and watch Netflix all day. The amazing thing about finding your person is that they are the one person who will never give up on you. They will turn off your TV pull you out of bed, and bring you back to reality just because they know you are worth more than that. Even if you hurt them, they won't give up on you because they know you are worth it and they want you to know that too. The most reassuring thing in the world is knowing that someone is there for you who will never give up on you like everyone else has. That's what makes this person your person.

I believe there is a person out there for everyone. Finding your person is one of the most special and rewarding things in the world. Not only do you find your person, but they find you, and to me that's pretty awesome.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
